Adjunct Clinical Educator – Nursing
Fontbonne University is looking to expand our pool of potential adjunct nursing faculty for our Bachelor of Science in Nursing program on our campus in Clayton, MO. The pool will be used to fill openings for spring semester 2024 and future semesters depending upon when courses are offered throughout the academic year. Adjunct faculty may teach in the lab, simulation, clinical, or classroom setting. Immediate needs are for adult health clinicals, adult health simulation, and preceptorship clinical oversight for spring 2024. Being in the pool does not guarantee a position with Fontbonne University.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical:
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Coordinator and Course Lead to ensure student clinical compliance and progression.
  • Supervise assigned group(s) of students in the clinical setting.
  • Arrange and complete an orientation with the clinical site unit manager to learn the assigned clinical unit and meet the mandatory requirements of the clinical site.
  • Prepare appropriate plans, materials, and learning activities for students to achieve the learning outcomes of each class.
  • Orient students to the clinical unit.
  • Select appropriate learning experiences for the assigned student group(s), i.e., client/patient assignments and planning clinical conferences.
  • Observation of the students’ performance, guidance of the students’ performance, review of procedures and principles as necessary, on-the-spot instruction as appropriate.
  • Evaluation of students’ clinical performance: in writing on a weekly basis; verbally on an individual basis; and written feedback on student assignments.
  • Consulting with students individually and/or in groups to review and/or evaluate progression towards clinical outcomes and identify teaching strategies that could be reinforced or adjusted.
  • Maintain a cooperative, positive relationship with the staff on any unit of the healthcare facility assigned to facilitate the optimum learning environment for the students.
  • Maintain effective, on-going communication with the Lead Instructor (and/or Director of Nursing Programs if appropriate) concerning student progress and/or concerns.
  • Models professional and ethical behaviors
  • Performs other duties appropriate to clinical assignment.
Simulation/Laboratory:
  • Collaborates with the Simulation Coordinator and Course Lead to design experiences/activities that complement field-based expectations for safe, effective practitioners.
  • Uses evidence-based pre-briefing, simulation scenarios, debriefing methods, and skills teaching strategies to provide best-practice teaching experience.
  • Incorporates sound pedagogy and andragogy into teaching activities in the skills lab.
  • Uses technology to enhance and optimize student learning outcomes.
  • Utilizes best evidence for developing teaching/learning activities.
  • Evaluates students’ skills performance in lab using program assessments.
  • Supervises students’ lab practice and provides students’ with timely feedback on skills performance.
  • Models professional and ethical behaviors
  • Performs other duties appropriate to simulation/lab assignment.
General Requirements
  • Communicates effectively through written, verbal, and technologic methods.
  • Effective interpersonal communication.
  • Adheres to competency, health, certification, licensure, and other requirements.
  • Commitment to working with diverse learners and communities, including first-generation students and students from underrepresented groups.
Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree in nursing
  • At least 2 years of experience as a registered nurse
  • Current, active licensure to practice professional nursing in Missouri; the candidate’s license to practice professional nursing has never been disciplined in any jurisdiction.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred Requirements
  • Recent nursing practice experience (past 5 years)
  • Experience in clinical education.
  • Experience in high-fidelity simulation.
  • Previous experience in implementing and evaluating simulation scenarios.

Benefits / Compensation
Adjunct Faculty members are not eligible for University benefits. Compensation for each course will be based on qualifications and experience of the applicant and will be determined during the planning for each course.
