Focus Laboratories is Hiring a Microbiology Laboratory Assistant Near Allentown, PA

Job Summary:
The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for supplying the laboratory with clean glassware and sterile microbiological media which will be used to confirm the safety and effectiveness of our client's medicines and devices.

Duties:

  • Wash glass ware and other laboratory utensils so that no soap, media or sample residue remains. Confirm cleanliness with each batch of glassware processed with bromothymol blue or other confirmatory tests outlined in FOCUS SOPs. Contemporaneously document washing activity and confirmatory tests on FOCUS controlled forms.
  • Rehydrate agar and broth powder powders purchased from qualified vendors in a safe and compliant manner as outlined in FOCUS SOPs. Receive list of media required from Laboratory manager, prepare media so that agar and/or nutrients are homogenously distributed throughout the batch, dispense in appropriate glassware to volumes requested, clearly label each unit with batch number and expiration date, and sterilize by validated autoclave cycles or filtration.
  • Record all laboratory tasks performed, including but not limited to preparation of media, facility maintenance, and glassware washing in compliance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as outlined in 21CFR210 and211 and relevant FDA enforcement actions.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while in the laboratory including but not limited to lab coat, hair net, gloves and safety glasses.
  • Help to maintain supply inventory by using Box Hero Inventory System when removing supplies from controlled storage areas, and by keeping an eye on prepared media and supply inventory under his or her controls.
  • Perform other essential laboratory maintenance duties as assigned and as necessary for a safe and effective laboratory, such as: disinfection of hoods, benches and floors, processing waste (daily garbage and biohazardous waste), bringing tested samples to retain storage and re-stocking local bench pipette, petri dish, and other supply bins.
  • Assists laboratory personnel as needed in tasks that Lab Assistant will be trained in.

Requirements:

  • Employees will have a high school degree and college level coursework in biological or chemical science, familiarity and understanding of metric system, be able to perform arithmetic calculations and record data in a legible contemporaneous manner.
  • They must work well with other people as they will be part of a team that relies on their media and glassware.
  • They should be able to multitask while still paying attention to detail.
  • They must always be conscious of safety for themselves and their laboratory partners while in the laboratory.
  • They must follow directions and be able to schedule their time necessary to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • They will also be expected to be self-directed in their use of spare time, completing daily start up and shut down, weekly, monthly and quarterly laboratory maintenance tasks.
