Job description

Hoffmann Florida Media Group owns Florida Weekly and publishes newspapers in Fort Myers, Naples, Bonita Springs, Charlotte County, Palm Beach County, Key West, Babcock Ranch, Ave Maria and Wellen Park, Florida, with a combined readership of over 200,000.

We seek a talented and motivated Editor to join our Fort Myers team. The candidate must reside in Lee County to be considered.

Job Description:

The Editor oversees the production and editorial direction of the Fort Myers edition, which circulates in Lee county. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the content strategy with other members of the editing and management teams, ensuring the timely delivery of engaging and informative content. The ideal candidate will have a passion for journalism, a keen eye for detail, and a strong understanding of Southwest Florida. We expect our editors to be involved and active in our communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the overall editorial process, including planning, assigning, and editing content.
  • Develop and execute the editorial strategy, ensuring that articles are compelling, accurate, and aligned with our publication's tone and style.
  • Collaborate with other editors, writers, photographers, freelancers, and other contributors to develop engaging and relevant stories.
  • Conduct thorough research and fact-checking to ensure the accuracy and credibility of all published content.
  • Stay up-to-date with local news, trends, and community events to identify new story ideas and opportunities for coverage.
  • Collaborate with the design team to ensure that the layout and visual elements of the publication enhance the newspaper.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to our Fort Myers corporate office for training and meetings.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • Must reside in Lee County to be considered.
  • Proven experience in a journalism or editorial role, with a focus on print or digital publishing.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a strong command of grammar, style, and AP guidelines.
  • Familiarity with the Collier County area and a solid understanding of the local community and its interests.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, with the capacity to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in assigning and managing staff/freelance writers with stories.
  • Proficient in content management systems and digital publishing platforms.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, WordPress publishing and SEO best practices and digital analytics tools is a plus.
