Florida Southern College is Hiring a College Archivist Near Lakeland, FL

The Archivist administers the operations and services of the McKay Archives Center, including physical, intellectual, and digital access to these collections. The position is a full-time staff position with faculty status though not subject to the tenure or faculty contract systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintain best practices and adherence to national standards and current theory in archival administration.

2. Apply professional standards to the processing, description, arrangement, security, and preservation of College records and manuscript collections.

3. Proactively manage secure electronic back-ups for all digital assets.

4. Co-manage digitization projects and CONTENTdm.

5. Plan and assess projects, set department goals, manage the archives budget, and order supplies.

6. Administer all public services for the Archives, including research, reference, website content, reproduction guidelines, and social media content, aligning service standards with those of the Library.

7. Work with Director of the Library and Office of Advancement to pursue grant and other funding for projects and programs.

8. Work with Director of the Library to maintain rigorous collection acquisition standards and investigate potential collection opportunities.

9. Engage with administrative units across the College to educate and promote appropriate deposition of materials to the Archives.

10. Solicit materials of historical value from student organizations.

11. Manage the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame Fellowship program.

12. Liaise with representatives of the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame Board, providing access to the records and collecting citrus related materials.

13. Develop and teach for-credit courses consistent with the mission of Roux Library and the McKay Archives.

14. Maintain and share monthly statistics on key performance criteria as agreed upon by the Director of the Library.

15. Supervise, train, and assess the Archives Technician, assuring that the Archives Technician has a thorough understanding of archives policies and practices and adheres to them rigorously.

16. Direct the projects and overall workflow of all student assistants, fellows, and interns.

17. Maintain productive working relationship with circulation supervisor assigned with oversight of student assistant program.

18. Produce scholarly articles, presentations at conferences, or content awareness articles for academic and community publications, in addition to any publications produced with collaborating peers.

19. Continually develops skillset through webinars, reading, publication, and association membership.

20. Participate as both a student and instructor at college professional development initiatives.

21. Develop and maintain high level of knowledge of the institution, college records, and manuscript collections.

22. Maintain highly visible presence with community, professional organizations, and peer institutions.

23. Maintain close working relationship with Office of Advancement, Office of Alumni Relations, and faculty, students, student organizations, and staff.

24. Maintain exemplary customer service skills and ability to articulate faculty, donor, contractual partner, and staff needs to colleagues

25. Support the work of the archives, library, and partners.

26. Participates in evening and weekend events for outreach purposes as scheduled and needed.

27. Contribute to the success of the department by performing all other duties as needed to drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the College.

EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS

1. ALA-accredited MLS degree with archival training.

2. Three to five years’ experience in an archives, preferably in an academic institution.

3. Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists preferred.

4. Demonstrated familiarity with national standards, current theory, and practice in archival administration, including digital records management and preservation.

5. Experience using bibliographic utilities including OCLC, integrated library systems, and CONTENTdm; and a working knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards such as MARC21, XML, EAD, Dublin Core, LCSH, DACS, AACR2, and authority control.

6. Experience with the collection and preservation of born-digital materials.

7. Experience with architectural records and knowledge of the built environment preferred.

8. Successful grant writing or participation in successful grant writing activity preferred.

9. Familiarity with the history and governance of the United Methodist Church desirable.

10. Demonstrated commitment to personal and professional development.

11. Ability to organize work and time, work closely with library colleagues, and work independently and with others on archives projects is necessary.

12. Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and verbal and written skills.

13. Proficiency with personal computing applications required.

14. Ability to consistently exhibit professional, friendly, positive, and outgoing demeanor.
