Position Summary:
Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation & Experiential Education - Boca Raton, FL
Reporting through the Department of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation & Experiential Education is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive outdoor recreation and experiential education program known as Base Camp. Under the Associate Director of Programs and Wellness Initiatives, the Assistant Director Outdoor Recreation and Experiential Education administers, organizes, and promotes Base Camp, serving over 2,000 participants a year, that includes (1) Adventure Trips (2) a high volume, comprehensive & dynamic Challenge Course (3) equipment rentals and (4) Instructional Programs.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Base Camp Operations
  • Establish and review program policies, procedures and practices.
  • Develop program calendar of trips, workshops, and events
  • Maintain annual use permits with land management agencies.
  • Train staff in driving vans/trucks and towing trailers.
  • Orchestrate basic vehicle maintenance and identify repairs needed.
  • Manage daily operations of the Challenge Course including curriculum development, client coordination, staff scheduling, client invoicing, and equipment management. Facilitate programs when necessary.
  • Develop and execute maintenance/retirement plan for Base Camp equipment and facilities.
  • Manage outdoor equipment rental program. Develop policies for outdoor equipment rental, routine maintenance, and equipment inventory.
  • Monitor payroll expenses, equipment expenses, and revenue projection.
  • Maintain and oversee Base Camp online registration system, and website.
Staff Development and Supervision
  • Responsible for recruitment, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating of the Base Camp Coordinator and Base Camp Manager or equivalent positions.
  • Recruit, hire, train and evaluate 20 Base Camp student staff.
  • Develop and implement appropriate training for initial and continuing education required for each position.
Risk Management
  • Create and direct risk management plans for all facets of Campus Recreation's Base Camp to include: Adventure Trips, Challenge Course Programs, Rental Center operations, and Instructional Programs.
  • Coordinate annual facility inspection and required/recommended maintenance per ACCT Standards.
  • Monitor and maintain records of required certifications and trainings for Base Camp staff.
Assessment
  • Assist with development of departmental strategic plan and annual assessment materials.
  • Develop and implement internal program assessments ensuring programs are consistent with student feedback and conducted in accordance with university policy, applicable laws, and industry standards.
  • Make decisions based on alignment with and achievement of the department's strategic plan and action steps.
Budgetary
  • Assist with preparing monthly and annual reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of the department's budget
  • Manage a budget of approximately $200,000 in expenses to include payroll, equipment, and facility repair expenses.
  • Monitor and project revenue goals in excess of $100,000.
  • Write and administer grants.
  • Lead staff trainings, trips and events as needed.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience.
