Nebraska Life Magazine is hiring a Writer for Nebraska’s statewide magazine. Through the work of our talented writers and photographers, we bring to light the untold stories of nature, history, businesses, events, communities, attractions, and people that make our state unique.

With six entertaining and colorful issues per year, we provide a guide for Nebraskans wherever they may live, and are dedicated to bringing the spirit of Nebraska to life.

Ideal candidates will have a portfolio of recent magazine or newspaper feature writing experience and will have a proven record of producing entertaining and thoughtful stories for an audience of readers.

Role Description

This is a contract remote role. The Writer will be expected to pitch and write assigned stories, research topics, conduct interviews and travel Nebraska. A successful candidate will be expected to meet deadlines and generate creative, engaging story ideas that connect with our readers.

Applicants must either live in Nebraska currently or be able to travel there.

Core Responsibilities

• Research and pitch feature and department story ideas about travel, history, food, people profiles, communities, businesses, artists and events
• Travel, interview and write feature and department stories for six bimonthly issues of Nebraska Life and other publications
• Assist with proofing and copy editing
• Assist with public relations and social media marketing

Qualifications

• Excellent writing and storytelling skills
• Ability to write engaging and informative stories
• Experience in journalism
• Strong research and interviewing skills
• Understand the importance of visual storytelling to accompany written stories
• Experience in travel, photography, recipe development, or history writing are a plus
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, creative writing, or a related field is preferred
• 2 years of magazine or news feature writing experience
• Bonus qualification: Intimate knowledge of Nebraska culture and history

Location: Remote from your home office with frequent travels around Nebraska.

Pay: From $22.50 per hour
