Position Summary:

The Field Museum is currently one of 22 institutions contributing to the Terrestrial Parasite Tracker project, an NSF-funded effort to digitize and publish data related to arthropod parasites specimens deposited in Natural History collections. These data have vast implications, and can provide insight into efforts ranging from disease prevention to ecosystem analysis. In this internship, participants will be involved in the digitization process of slide-mounted specimens from start to finish. They will be responsible for slide pre-curation, inventorying, barcoding, scanning, image cropping, and metadata attachment. They will also lead a community digitization session through Notes from Nature, and present their findings and experience at the final research symposium.

Applicants should demonstrate good attention to detail and have the manual dexterity to handle microscope slides, pinned specimens, and other small and fragile objects. Additionally, they should possess a basic understanding of taxonomic principles, and be familiar with working in spreadsheets. Applicants should be comfortable asking questions, working independently with guidance, and using reference material when necessary.

Applicants must still be in high school. This Internship is 35 hours per week at $16.50 per hour with a desired start date of June 10th, 2024 though July 26th, 2024.
