Program Description

Felton Institute has been providing comprehensive early care and education services in San Francisco since 1971. Felton now has ECE programs in SF’s Mission, Bayview and Visitation Valley neighborhoods; and offers a school-readiness program for infants, toddlers and preschoolers (2 weeks to 6 years old). Felton’s ECE programs 4 ECE sites all of which providee early intervention services in an inclusion setting. These multicultural, educational programs provide a nurturing, developmentally challenging, and inclusive environment for very young children of low/moderate income families. We are committed to inclusive, positive environments that build on children’s positive self-esteem and self-image.

This position is based at Sojourner Truth Center in San Francisco's Bayview Neighborhood.

Program Specific Responsibilities

Brief Description:

The Early Interventionist is expected to conduct assessments using a variety of different tools and provide individualized instruction and specialized intervention to children with a range of developmental disabilities, including children on the Autism spectrum, at the center and (occasionally) at home. The Early Interventionist prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities; assesses and monitors child progress using different data collection methods, ensures quality of intervention, maintains confidentiality of children, families, and staff involved in the program, attends and participates in meetings, trainings and conferences as assigned. The Early Interventionist must be familiar with and willing to learn a range of tools and intervention approaches specific to the field of Early Intervention (e.g. Early Start Denver Model; Assessment, Evaluation and Programming System; Activity-Based Intervention, Hanen Centre programs, Routines-based Intervention, ABA, DIR/Floortime, Kimochis), and how to implement them to fidelity in the natural environment. The Early Interventionist is expected to demonstrate a family-centered, culturally-sensitive and strengths-based approach in working with children with special needs and their families. 

The Early Interventionist will work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary Early Intervention team to coordinate and deliver services to young children (birth to 3) with special needs at the center and in family homes. While working with children at the center, intervention will be delivered in the inclusive classroom environment and the Early Interventionist will be expected to work collaboratively with Early Childhood Educators and other teaching staff in supporting the optimal growth and development of children with special needs in the classroom, with a heavy focus on coaching and capacity-building. When delivering intervention in the home, the Early Interventionist is expected to work collaboratively and in partnership with the child’s caregivers and family members to support the child’s growth and development at home, with a heavy focus on parent coaching and capacity-building.

In addition to providing direct intervention to children, the Early Interventionist is also expected to perform any related administrative duties pertaining to the families that they work with, such as documenting time in direct intervention, writing progress notes, intervention plans, progress/exit reports, collecting child or teacher data, monitoring and evaluating child progress, and engaging in continuous self-directed learning and training. The Early Interventionist might also be expected to assist in other aspects of program implementation and evaluation as assigned by his or her supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field, plus minimum 1-year experience working directly with children with special needs and their families using assessment, and other professional skills related to this position. – REQUIRED
• Bilingual English/Spanish – Preferred
• Computer skills: Excel, Microsoft Word, other programs- REQUIRED
• Familiar with Community Care Licensing and Title 5, Title 17 Regulations
• Familiarity with and training in evidence-based intervention approaches, such as the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), routines-based intervention, positive behavior support, ABA, etc. – STRONGLY PREFERRED
• Experience working in an inclusion/early intervention program model preferred
• Commitment to social justice, empowerment of families and support for diversity
• Knowledge of the child development field as well as dynamics of low-income families
• Knowledge of San Francisco child care and family services communities preferred
• Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of and sensitivity to the cultural background of the children and families being served
• Demonstrate ability to create and maintain team effort in the implementation of programs and projects
• Attention to detail and multitasking abilities
• Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and decision-making capabilities
• Ability to work independently under broad supervision
• Ability to be a team player with a welcoming attitude and flexibility
• Physical agility to lift and carry up to 40 pounds and to bend, stoop, walk and reach overhead, Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist and turn
• CPR and/or Standard First Aid Certification required.
