Federal Signal is Hiring a Senior Controls Development Engineer - R&D Near Elgin, IL

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct brainstorming sessions with engineering colleagues to aid in generation of new controls concepts, circuit designs, or new methodologies.
  • Create new controls architecture, design and analyze new circuits, and develop programming that can adapt our products to function with new and emerging technology.
  • Own system hardware selection for new 12V-700V systems. Includes selection of new electric motors, actuators, and power electronics required for integration with high voltage vehicle systems.
  • Lead definition of product specifications and help to set product technical/functional requirements.
  • Create, execute controls validation and calibration test plans in partnership with our lab or external partners; applying principles of agile development to solve new issues with incremental releases.
  • Manage outside engineering vendors and coordinate with internal controls/EE stakeholders that may be brought in to accelerate development of new concepts.
  • Some travel will be required to visit with customers, research and study new technologies, and participate in testing or validation in remote locations.
  • Perform other duties, assignments, and special projects as required.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Bachelor's Degree in Controls, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Aerospace, Automotive, or Computer Engineering with a minor in Electrical Engineering required. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum seven (7) years' experience required.
  • Experience working with I/O language, controllers, controls logic design, and automotive networks such as CAN/LIN.
  • Proficiency in at least one model-based controls development environment using a tool such as Codesys, IQAN, Matlab, Simulink or equivalent, Raptor
  • Understanding of electromechanical systems and electric vehicle systems.
  • Experience with data acquisition, data analysis and statistical methods for purposes of refinement and calibration.
  • Experience in designing automotive, industrial, or agricultural system controls a plus. i.e. Vehicle braking systems, steering, cooling systems, ICE or EV powertrain development
  • Experience with calibration tools
  • Familiarity with commercial software configuration management tools
  • High voltage wiring and design experience
  • Experience with safety analysis of systems including FMEAs
