Position: SBIRT Peer Recovery Support Specialist – PRSS

Program: SBIRT Program (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment)

Immediate Supervisor: SBIRT Supervisor or on-site designee

Job Summary:

The Peer Recovery Coach provides non-clinical services intended to aid patients in establishing recovery from high risk of dependent alcohol and drug use problems. The Peer Recovery Coach will work as part of the Emergency Department team to provide peer support and motivation to encourage patients who are seeking treatment for alcohol or drug dependency and addiction issues. The Peer Recovery Coach will assist in completing referrals to treatment services and developing service plans to promote successful linkage to treatment services. Services will be provided in the hospital.

Major Responsibilities:

· Works as the SBIRT PRSS at St Francis, and Prisma. Schedule may vary as ED needs evolve and change.

· Conducts brief interventions to patients that screen positive for alcohol and/or drug use.

· Identifies patient’s history of drug/alcohol use, treatment history, motivation to change behavior and other needs for community support services.

· Identifies patient’s readiness to change and use motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support a plan for reducing or eliminating harmful drug and/or alcohol use.

· Works with ED staff and social workers to identify community support services.

· Assists patients and family with understanding how to utilize these community services.

· Assists patients in linking to community support services and substance treatment services including securing appointments and transportation.

· Acts as peer support throughout the hospitalization and post-discharge, as appropriate to facilitate attainment of goals.

· Provides family members with recovery support materials.

· Provides telephone outreach to patients to assist with linkages and continued peer support as an ACE coach as needed.

· Models coping techniques and self-help strategies.

· Participates in trainings to continually gain new skills.

· Attends required staff and other meetings.

· Completes required documentation and other reports.

· Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support.

· Consults with nursing staff, social work as requested, even if patient does not screen positive.

· Notifies patient’s nurse before visiting the patient.

· Telephone treatment providers to verify patient showed up for appointment; and follow-up by telephone with any patient that misses an appointment.

· When in doubt, consult SBIRT Supervisor with questions or concerns.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

· Compassion for persons actively struggling with Substance Use Disorder

· Good interpersonal skills

· The ability to work well with patients & healthcare professionals & partner agencies

· The candidate must be able to work independently,

· Have great time management skills and the ability to prioritize effectively.

· The candidate must possess listening, verbal and written communication skills,

· Creative problem-solving skills

· Strong computer skills are required and the ability to provide patient documentation in the healthcare software system.

· Teach ability and train ability.

Education, Experience, and/or Training Requirements:

· High School Diploma or GED

· The candidate must be actively engaged in his/her own recovery program with at least 2 years of demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or drug use.

· No previous experience working in the addiction field or healthcare required but is preferred.

· Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS)

· Upon hire, staff will have to be approved and credentialed by Prisma Health
