The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty/chairperson position in the Global Fashion Management Department, School of Graduate Studies.

The Global Fashion Management Master of Professional Studies (MPS) program prepares experienced apparel industry professionals to advance to more senior level and executive positions by providing interactive, student-centered education taught by seasoned industry professionals and accomplished academics. The program's global partnerships and international student body are designed to enrich the curriculum through discussion and awareness. Research, collaboration, and communication foster leadership, innovation, and strategic thinking, with the objective of infusing progressive ideas into a rapidly changing and highly competitive industry.


Job Description:

The School of Graduate Studies seeks a full-time tenure-track faculty member and chair to lead and administer the Global Fashion Management Department. The successful candidate will demonstrate business and creative skills in the fashion and apparel industry across a broad range of interdisciplinary fashion business management fields, with a strong focus on the global fashion industry, and demonstrate an understanding of the role of sustainability and technology throughout the global fashion industry. They must also be familiar with understanding corporate financial issues and marketing and promotional campaigns.

The successful candidate will demonstrate ability to work effectively, based on practical, corporate industry experience and through collaboration and participation in international settings with colleagues and program partners from multicultural backgrounds, including conceptualization, management and leadership of program-specific events and seminars. Specifically, this will include active communication and planning with partner institutions in Paris, Hong Kong, and Mexico City, and the leadership, planning, and execution of the opening three-credit seminar in New York, one of FIT's reputational events.

The new department chair will be the driving force to lead a master of professional studies in global fashion management and serve an essential role in the oversight of the program, as well as its expansion and implementation of new graduate course offerings in the degree curriculum, and executive education/advanced professional development formats, while also benchmarking those offerings against fashion industry, graduate business programs and academic best practices locally and internationally.

The successful candidate will possess global fashion industry expertise with a proven track record of collaborative exchange; ability to mentor emerging early and mid-career-level talent working in the fashion industry; experience in successful team leadership, and an established and active professional network within the fashion industry locally and internationally are required, including experience leading industry-related events. A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as sustainability, is imperative.

The successful candidate will participate in department, School and college-wide service and campus-wide committee work. The candidate will have teaching and/or corporate training experience in the fashion industry, a record of scholarly or industry research, and contributions to the field that include some or all of the following: projects, publications, presentations, lectures, panels, and involvement in professional fashion industry-related activities. The candidate will demonstrate, based on applicable fashion industry experience, the ability to mentor student/faculty research projects and publication-level classroom deliverables.

An interest in and ability to fundraise for program growth to support alumni events is desired.

  • Demonstrate a record of global awareness-culturally, politically, and academically-and a working knowledge of the apparel industry's global supply chains, major retailers, production facilities, technological innovation, trade policies, industrial sustainability issues, and design knowledge within relevant global regions.   • Articulate a pedagogical philosophy aligned with the department and apparel industry.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop a variety of assessment tools for student work, to capture the wide range of learning styles in the classroom.
  • Demonstrate the ability to incorporate interdisciplinary programs to reflect contemporary apparel business operations.
  • Cultivate and maintain connections with local and international businesses to support the integration of current and emerging professional practices into the curriculum.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional delivery methods that foster critical thinking and creative problem solving in the apparel industry.

Professionalism

  • Maintain active participation and engage in fashion and apparel industry-related research projects which inform and enhance the discipline.
  • Participate in global conferences for the apparel industries, including the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes (IFFTI).
  • Leverage and maintain a professional network of alumni and apparel/fashion industry professionals who will serve as a resource for internships, mentors, curriculum development, guest speakers and placement opportunities for graduates.
  • Demonstrate currency and engagement in the primary teaching disciplines, fashion and apparel industry trends, and also in related industries including global economic trends and various distribution channels, retail formats, and supply chain.
  • Demonstrate interest and ability to promote the program through active social media campaigns.

Technology

  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of current and emerging technologies to support and enhance the learning and teaching environments.
  • Incorporate programs supported by the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) platform in the classroom and online learning.
  • Leverage professional development and educational opportunities offered campus-wide and through industry.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a graduate degree (MBA, MPS, MPA, MSc, MPhil, MEd, JD, PhD, ScD, DPhil, EdD or equivalent) and relevant fashion/apparel industry experience within a corporate environment; a demonstrated record in teaching; and relevant corporate learning and development/training experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years of practical apparel and fashion industry experience at a management level within corporate industry brands and retailers.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a range of courses across disciplines in the MPS program, focused on the apparel and fashion industries, including domestic and overseas field study seminars.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a record of demonstrated success in the fashion industry, including training and development at the corporate level, curriculum development and presentations and/or college-level teaching, as well as practical experience on a senior level within a fashion brand, retailer, or production facility.
