Family Promise of Waukesha County is Hiring a Family Advocate for Shelter Diversion Program Near Waukesha, WI

Family Promise of Waukesha County, Inc. is starting a new Shelter Diversion Program in Waukesha County. This is an exciting moment to join our team and help plan, develop and implement a program from the ground up. We will work collaboratively with the Wisconsin Balance of State in creating the program.

Summary of Role

Family Promise of Waukesha County is seeking a passionate and committed individual who will bring a trauma informed approach to caring and advocating for the needs of families experiencing homelessness. The main goal of the Family Advocate is to use their creativity, resources, and life experience to assist families who are newly experiencing homelessness to achieve safe, stable housing without having to enter the shelter system. The individual who holds this role will also need to be knowledgeable of mainstream services, familiar with a number of housing options to best serve the families who are in crisis. The individual who has this role will work collaboratively with the Family Promise of Waukesha County Program Team and receive direct supervision from the Family Services Director.

Qualifications and Competencies

The Shelter Diversion Family Advocate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or comparable degree. A minimum of two years providing case management and experience supporting families experiencing homelessness is preferred.

  • Commitment to diversity, equality, inclusion and accessibility as well as an ability to work with diverse clients and a network of volunteers, supporters and agencies in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.

Essential Functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Accept referrals at the “front-door” and provide a prompt response to families who are imminently at risk of becoming homeless and/or at the cusp of entering shelter.
  • Assist families to quickly and creatively secure temporary and permanent housing.
  • Connect families with mainstream resources to address obstacles to housing.
  • Maintains case notes in a timely fashion.
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Diversion Coordinator in providing care and services to families experiencing homelessness.
  • Serve as an advocate for families with community service agencies.
  • Provide crisis support to families as needed.
  • Conduct regular meetings and communicate with families in a way that is mutually convenient.
  • Maintain in a timely and thorough manner various information management systems regarding referral sources, referral outcomes, guest intakes, guest progress, program completion, guest discharges, alumni progress and outcome measurements including HMIS/Clarity and Coordinated Entry.

Supervisory Responsibility

None.

Work Environment

This job operates in an office environment within a day center shelter for homeless families. It involves regular interaction with and distraction from day center guests along with drop-in/call-in donors, volunteers, vendors and clients. Home visits are required. This role routinely uses standard office systems such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Should be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, exempt position. Some hours are scheduled to ensure coverage of the Family Resource and Day Center. General office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However our hours are often dictated by the needs of families. Evening and weekend hours are regularly required.

Travel

Local travel by automobile during the business day occurs regularly and should be expected. There is some evening and weekend travel. Out-of-the-area and overnight travel is rare.
