HARM:LESS SUPPORT COORDINATOR

Description of Responsibilities

Syringe Services Program (SSP):

  • In collaboration with other staff, perform daily operations and functions to ensure services are accessible to participants.
  • Distribute syringes and other harm reduction supplies.
  • Safely collect biohazard bins containing used syringes, following all safety procedures.
  • Provide follow-up outreach to individuals who have recently experienced a nonfatal overdose.
  • Provide education on harm reduction laws (including the syringe exchange law, Good Samaritan/naloxone access law).
  • Distribute naloxone kits and provide education on how to prevent and reverse opioid overdose.
  • Provide education on how to prevent and respond to overamping/stimulant overdose.
  • Provide harm reduction education on safer drug use and safer sex.
  • Provide community based STI/HIV/hepatitis prevention education.
  • Work closely with FAN staff to provide referrals and linkage to care for medication assisted treatment (MAT), detox, and other substance use disorder and medical services as needed to participants of SSP.
  • Work with FAN staff to provide referrals and linkage to healthcare, housing, and other social services as needed to participants of SSP.
  • Provide rapid HCV/HIV counseling, testing, and referral services to participants of SSP.

Community Outreach and Education:

  • Provide trainings to community members and professionals on harm reduction, overdose prevention, syringe services programs, and other topics.
  • Attend coalition and community meetings.
  • Assist in supervising and training volunteers.

Data Collection:

  • Ensure all outreach work meets program deliverables set by supervisor.
  • Log all SSP, naloxone, outreach, referrals/linkage, testing, and education data diligently and promptly.

Community Organizing and Advocacy:

  • Support participants and other outreach staff in building community organizing and advocacy capacity of program members.
  • Participate in advancing local and statewide harm reduction advocacy goals.
  • Participate in regular training calls or in-person training sessions on best practices in harm reduction.
  • Attend in-house workshops and training seminars for staff, as well as external training as assigned.

Respect and Confidentiality:

  • Be culturally aware and respectful of people who use drugs, people who do sex work, people living with HIV or HCV, currently and formerly incarcerated people, and the LGBTQ community.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and treat all participants with warmth and positive regard.
  • Leave all biases at home. SSP is a safe, non-judgmental, and all-inclusive space.

Other Duties:

● Works with the Program Director and Program Coordinator within designated areas to promote and connect the unhoused and community of people using drugs, and be willing to assist in other areas when necessary.

● Utilize stages of change when engaging with individuals.

● Maintain and build relationships with other community organizations and leaders in your region.

● Attend and participate in all mandatory meetings.

● Ability to build and maintain rapport with individuals who need lineage to services.

● Provide current FAN services, resources, or placement via Hope Not Handcuffs to individuals when necessary.

● Engage in harm reduction strategies.

● Meet with Program Director for monthly meetings in person or through video conferencing.

● Assist in reporting data through reporting gateways and submit all program outcomes to the Program Director.

● Provide timely and accurate documentation of outreach activities.

● Support and effectively communicate with all FAN team members.

● Provide training on overdose prevention and naloxone to people who are actively using drugs and their allies.

● Assist in implementing new ideas in the future of harm reduction.

● Remain knowledgeable about all FAN programs and national trends.

● Represent FAN/HARM:LESS in a professional manner while performing duties.

● Provide monthly detailed time and expense sheets (including receipts).

● Assist in presentations with potential new FAN programs.

● Attend monthly FAN Forums and assist as needed.

● Other duties as assigned.

Experience:

  • Must demonstrate ability to establish and maintain ethical relationships with SSP participants, maintain strict confidentiality, and treat all participants non-judgmentally and with warmth and positive regard.
  • Must be comfortable with harm reduction framework. Must be comfortable with public speaking and group presentations. Knowledge about Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, injection drug use, syringe exchange, STIs, and substance use is required.
  • Must be comfortable discussing social, sexual, drug-related, and other harm reduction issues and experiences in a non-judgmental manner with both individuals and groups.
  • Must demonstrate strong communication skills and an ability to thrive while working autonomously.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance, and be comfortable with driving long distances.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings.
  • People who are HIV/hepatitis positive, have a history of drug use, sex work, or incarceration are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Knowledge of Google products, such as Drive, Gmail and Calendar.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Successful completion of mandatory state certifications.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs., and sit, stand, bend, walk, climb, lift, carry, and/or reach frequently, and for extended periods of time.

This position is grant-funded and subject to the funding, budget, and timelines within grant provisions.

The position is for up to 40 hours per week. Benefits are available.
