  • Appropriate Massachusetts Licensure
  • Bachelor's Degree with major or minor in English
REPORTS TO: Principal and Department Head
Job GoalTo develop literacy skills (skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing) that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship; to develop appreciation and investigation of good literature; to develop strong writing skills; to provide students with authentic and alternative assessments; to develop criteria for critical judgment of written and oral communications; to direct research and inquiry as a vehicle for student driven learning; to utilize differentiated instruction to ensure all students receive an equitable education.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, and journalism students, utilizing a standards based course of study developed by the English Department and adopted by the School Committee
  • Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of
the individual student.
  • Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussion based on a variety of classical and
contemporary literature.
  • Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Evaluates each student's progress in English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive
classroom environment.
  • Identifies student needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and
helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Participates in curriculum and other development programs.
  • Maintains professional growth through in-service educational activities provided by the school
department and/or in self-selected professional activities.
  • All other responsibilities that are listed in the collective bargaining agreement between the Fall River
Educators' Association and the Fall River School Committee.
SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with the Fall River Educators’ Association contract. Employment is contingent upon job performance, program needs, and funding.
