Job Description

Overview:

Adjunct faculty are hired by the university to teach and facilitate courses on a term/contract-basis. These faculty serve to support the overall functions of the university by providing their content-area expertise. Their appointments are dependent upon instructional need, and they serve a part-time function within the institution. Their duties are limited to teaching or curriculum development within the institution. Adjunct faculty are subject to all applicable policies and procedures of the University, including the provisions of the Faculty Handbook and any future revisions to it.

All faculty, including adjuncts, help students achieve their academic and professional goals by encouraging a university culture of learning that values mutual responsibility and respect, lifelong learning and ethics, as well as personal and professional development. The ideal candidate is committed to informing and inspiring students to learn and succeed both in career and life; committed to preparing students for a lifetime of social performance and personal fulfillment; and committed to building the capacity of students to become active global citizens who pursue social impact throughout their career – regardless of which career path they choose.

Responsibilities:

Teaching and Student Engagement

  • Prepare course outlines and syllabi, develop course and lesson plans, and participate in the selection of textbooks and other teaching aids necessary for the instruction of courses.
  • Serve as a professional mentor to students throughout their program of study including formal and informal advising of students on their academic and professional trajectory.
  • Engage in the development of new and creative instructional materials, including new courses and programs of study and establish a classroom environment conducive to learning and student engagement by delivering learning-centered instruction using lectures, demonstrations, and class discussions.
  • Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, enforcing standards of academic integrity and utilizing university grading rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work.
  • Post and hold office hours (2 hours per course taught) in a physical/electronic format, as appropriate.
  • Teach all assigned courses, ensuring that the minimum required hours of instruction are maintained.

Curriculum and Assessment Management

  • Contribute to the collection of and interpretation of relevant assessment data for courses being taught.
  • Actively contribute to and support the development of new curricula (programmatic and course-based) to improve the educational offerings of the university.

Continuing Scholarly and Professional Development

  • Maintain a current knowledge of advances and innovations in the academic discipline and pursue scholarly development within and outside the subject discipline; complete a Faculty Development Plan cataloging professional development.
  • Engage in scholarly activity related to the discipline (e.g., presentation of papers, serving on panel discussions, publication of articles and books, grant writing, participation in seminars, book reviewing and abstracting).
  • Where possible, contribute to the improvement of the university by helping to recruit advisory board members.

Service

  • Attend department/school and university meetings along with faculty retreats, in-service workshops, conferences, honors and awards ceremonies, and the commencement ceremony.

Qualifications

  • Masters or Doctoral (or terminal) Degree in the field of study seeking to teach or another closely related field. The fields of study include the following General Education Divisions: Arts and Humanities; Communications; Mathematical Sciences; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences and Cross-Cultural Studies.
  • Professors of practice must have documented experience as a practitioner in their respective field of 5 or more years.
  • Prior experience teaching at the higher education level.
  • For Program Chair consideration: 5 years of progressively responsible experience in program oversight and/or leadership.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of human development (particularly, adult development).
  • Familiarity with the concepts of “learning to learn” and lifelong learning.
  • Experience in designing and/or facilitating career and leadership development learning experiences (preferred).
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and up-to-date knowledge of academic and industry trends.
  • Familiarity with assessment and process improvement and knowledge of data collection techniques and the ability to assess and analyze collected data.
  • Knowledge of accreditation requirements, including programmatic accreditation (as applicable).
  • Ability to supervise and mentor other faculty members within the program area.
  • Experience with a learning management system (Canvas preferred).
  • Ability to respond to the needs of learners and colleagues from a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to carry out projects with minimal supervision.
  • Meticulously edit documents possessing a high level of attention to detail is required.
  • Manage complex and highly sensitive materials and foster a culture of confidentiality.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to excel in a demanding, outcome-oriented, and dynamic environment with little supervision.
  • Creativity and the ability to envision and achieve a positive outcome.
