Job Announcement

$2,500 Signing Bonus*

Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment, under limited supervision.

Analyzes and diagnoses gas and fuel operated vehicles for maintenance defects. Performs Virginia state and emission inspections of vehicles and equipment.

Performs related work as required.

Day Shifts : 5 : 30 a.m. to 2 : 00 p.m., 10 : 00 a.m. to 6 : 30 p.m., or 11 : 00 a.m. to 7 : 30 p.m.

Evening Shifts : 2 : 00 p.m. to 10 : 30 p.m.

Locations : Alban, Jermantown, Newington or West Ox depending on the needs of the department.

Note : This job announcement may be used to fill multiple full-time Vehicle and Equipment Technician I positions. This is an entry-level position, and the salary offer will not exceed the mid-point (or $66,456.

83) of the advertised salary range.

The position may be underfilled as a Vehicle and Equipment Technician Aide (Grade S15); the underfill requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.

A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the full-time Vehicle and Equipment Technician I position.

Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.

Illustrative Duties

  • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects in automobiles, trucks, trailers, off-road equipment, motorcycles, pumps, generators, and other mechanical equipment;
  • Inspects and tests equipment for mechanical defects, and repairs or replaces worn and / or defective parts;
  • Inspects, repairs, and / or replaces defective parts in the following mechanical systems : engine, transmission, driveline, steering, suspension, brake, heating, cooling, air conditioning, starting, charging, fuel, ignition, electrical, electronic, body, tire, supplemental restraint, lighting, hydraulic, emergency accessories, and hybrid drive systems;
  • Performs basic care and scheduled maintenance, including changing oil, checking fluid levels, cleaning and lubricating parts, and rotating tires;
  • Follows checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined;
  • Reads and interprets diagnostic test results to identify mechanical problems;
  • Makes emergency road repairs and tire repairs in all weather conditions;
  • Test-drives vehicles;
  • Keeps records of inspections, test results, work performed, and parts used;
  • Assists higher level mechanics in difficult repairs;
  • Attends safety training.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of methods and tools commonly used by journey level service technicians in the repair and maintenance of automotive and industrial equipment;
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;
  • Mechanical skills to be familiar with engine components and systems and know how they interact with each other;
  • Troubleshooting skills to diagnose mechanical problems and make appropriate repairs to a wide variety of automotive and industrial equipment;
  • Basic keyboarding skills;
  • Ability to use tools and test equipment pertinent to the trade;
  • Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity, such as lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, and crawling and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions;
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;
  • Ability to test-drive vehicles and equipment;
  • Ability to read and comprehend relevant documents;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following : (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Completion of the tenth grade plus two years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and / or specialized automotive equipment.

Related automotive technical education or trade training above the high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of a set of hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets.

Personal tools are required upon appointment.

UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS

This position may be underfilled as a Vehicle and Equipment Technician Aide (Grade S15; $43,498.00 - 72,496.11).

The employment standards for the Vehicle and Equipment Technician Aide are

  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade with coursework in vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Possession of a set of basic hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, sockets, and ratchets.

Personal tools are required upon appointment.

Underfill candidates must be able to meet the minimum qualifications of the Vehicle and Equipment Technician I within two years of the job announcement's closing date by 5 / 31 / 2026.

Applicants hired at the Vehicle and Equipment Technician Aide level will be non-competitively promoted to the Vehicle and Equipment Technician I level upon successful completion of an underfill agreement.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED

For the Department of Vehicle Services

  • Valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Prior to completion of the probationary period, certain positions require a current Virginia Safety State Inspection Certificate and / or a Virginia Emission Inspections License.
  • A valid Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) or CDL - Class B with air brakes, P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements is required within 30 days of an offer.

Applicants hired with a CLP must obtain a CDL - Class B with air brakes, P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements within eleven months of hire date.

  • May be required to provide copies of driving record periodically for verification of driving status.
  • Fairfax County requires CDL holders to obtain and keep current a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Possess current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.

e., weather, transportation, other disaster).

  • The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, Commercial Driver License screening and pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.
  • Pre-employment, random, and post-accident and alcohol testing is required for these positions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift 50 pounds on an average of once daily; stoop, bend, twist, and reach many times daily; use ladders extensively;

user creeper (or get on hands and knees) several times daily. Ability to work in temperatures ranging from 0 to 100 degrees and drive commercial vehicles.
