Fairfax County Health Department is currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as School Health Aides. In this role, you will provide direct school student health services within Fairfax County Public Schools, catering to the needs of students from various backgrounds. As a School Health Aide, you will offer essential care to students who are ill or injured, including first aid, emergency care, and the administration of medications or treatments in the assigned school. routine and non-routine situations at the assigned school. Moreover, you will engage in vital administrative tasks, such as maintaining student health records, documenting health room visits, compiling health room data statistics, and ensuring the accuracy of authorization forms information. School Health Aides receive comprehensive training and supervision from our experienced Public Health Nurses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides care following established guidelines; communicate with parents/guardians and school staff as necessary. Administers first aid according to established protocols to students who are ill or injured, within various locations on school grounds.
  • Conducts health screenings (vision and hearing screening) and assists Public Health Nurse in notifying parents/guardians of abnormal screening results and recommended follow-up.
  • Maintains clear and accurate documentation of health room visits daily. Organizes and maintains the health room, ensuring it is well-equipped, safe, and accessible.
  • Compiles and submits health room statistics and reports using computer data entry and information systems. Responds promptly to emergencies and administers emergency medications, such as Epinephrine (EpiPen), following health protocols.
  • Calls 911 and ensures appropriate care protocols are followed during health emergencies. Participates in communicable disease surveillance in schools.
  • Attends required training sessions and contributed to community activities related to public health emergency responses.

Note: Multiple positions may be filled from this job announcement. The hourly salary rate will not exceed the midpoint of $26.58. Health Department positions are designated as Emergency First Responder. Based on the emergency response deployment needs, this position may be deployed to support the emergency response service needs.

Positions:

  • Non-merit E-status position. Cannot exceed 1560 hours per calendar year. The appointee is eligible for limited employee benefits (including medical, vision and dental insurance coverage) and participation in flexible spending programs, but not eligible to earn leave, holiday pay or retirement benefits.
  • Non-Merit G-Status temporary position. Cannot exceed 900 hours per calendar year. The appointee is not eligible for benefits and does not earn paid leave or holiday pay.

Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of high school; plus, any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to two years of post- secondary education in a field related to early childhood education or human services; plus, two years of experience working with children and families. Clear oral and written communication skills.
Will have a desire to work with school age children to promote health and wellbeing.

Certificates and Licenses Required:
CPR- Required within 30 days.
AED- Required within 30 days.
Valid driver’s license

Necessary Special Requirements:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a Criminal Background Investigation check, a Child Protective Services check and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

  • Successful completion of department-sponsored Fairfax County Health Department School Health Aide orientation prior to assignment in a school for continued employment; Part of the orientation is virtual, accessibility to the internet will be required.
  • Evaluated as competent in the care of sick and injured children.
  • A TB risk assessment and immunization review will be required for employees assigned to this class.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred candidate will have education, or training beyond high school in a relevant course of study. Proven ability to interact in a friendly, service-oriented, and professional manner with students, parents/guardians, school staff. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Position requires the candidate to be proactive, exercise good judgment, use critical thinking skills, be organized, and have excellent customer service skills. Clear oral and written communication skills. Ability to adapt to changes in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in recordkeeping and in use of Microsoft Office software applications (i.e., MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, MS Teams) and electronic health records systems.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Able to carry/lift equipment, supplies and/or young children up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Generally, works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. Job is generally sedentary in nature, and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), and kneeling, reaching, bending, climbing stairs; pushing a wheelchair or walking briskly to respond to student/staff health needs or emergencies. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing in English. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
