The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' access to health services and information. The FCHD Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is seeking a self-motivated, team oriented Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. A Breastfeeding Counselor is a woman who will work in our WIC clinic locations providing basic breastfeeding information, support, services, and referrals to WIC participants. Breastfeeding Counselors will be provided the Loving Support© Through Peer Counselor Training.

This position:

• Educates and supports pregnant and breastfeeding WIC mothers
• Provides support by phone and/or in-person (in both group and one-on-one formats)
• Is available to assist breastfeeding WIC participants by phone outside of business hours
• Accurately enters data and information into appropriate databases, schedules appointments and files in addition to other administrative duties.
• Refers participants to WIC breastfeeding staff as needed

Duties are performed under the supervision of the Breastfeeding Peer Coordinator and under the guidance of the Breastfeeding Coordinator. This position will require travel to multiple WIC sites on an as needed basis.

Note: This is a grant-funded, non-merit E-status position. Cannot exceed 1560 hours per calendar year. Appointee is eligible for limited employee benefits (including medical, vision and dental insurance coverage) and participation in flexible spending programs, but not eligible to earn leave, holiday pay or retirement benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education plus one year of customer service experience.

Certificates and Licenses Required:
Valid motor vehicle driver's license.

Necessary Special Requirements:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a Criminal Background Check, a Child Protective Services Registry, a driving record check, to the satisfaction of the employer.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Candidates will have successfully breastfed one or more infants for at least 6 months or more.
• Ability to communicate effectively and deal tactfully with clients of diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds
• Models outstanding customer service skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and other information systems such as an electronic health records system
• Has reliable transportation
• Bilingual Spanish/English, a plus

Physical Requirements:
Employee is required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to drive a vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
