POSITION TITLE: Librarian, Technical Services

STATUS: Regular Full Time

SALARY: 13A $33.19/hr

FLSA: Non-Exempt

BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide original and copy cataloging based on current standards, assign call numbers, and resolve cataloging problems. Stay current in best practices and up-to-date cataloging policies and use that knowledge to provide training, lead projects, and develop procedures for cataloging and processing. Perform professional work in the areas of cataloging, reference, collection development, or other specific fields as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

1. Participate in formulating goals, objectives, and near-term and long-range planning for Collections Services, with a focus on cataloging and processing. Implement new and existing procedures and solutions to problems. Assist supervisor in the management of the overall integrity of the bibliographic database.

2. Create original MARC records, copy catalog, and edit and load bibliographic records to the Integrated Library System and OCLC for both print and non-print items. Identify and correct incomplete/incorrect records and upgrades according to AACR2 or RDA cataloging rules.

3. Assign LC call numbers to print and non-print library materials. Add classification and call number schemes to new formats as necessary to accommodate new collections.

4. Interpret and apply Library of Congress subject headings, the LC Classifications system, AACR2, RDA and OCLC manuals in cataloging and classifying library materials.

5. Provide guidance and technical direction on copy cataloging, processing, and serials.

6. Provide instructional aids and provide instruction for staff on search techniques in ILS and OPAC.

7. Evaluate cataloging and processing procedures, implementing changes as needed. Develop and update manual describing local cataloging and processing decisions, procedures, and systems.

8. Provide public assistance at the reference desk and elsewhere as required.

9. Select materials in assigned areas of the collection; participate in professional meetings.

10. Participate in professional activities, track cataloging trends, and serve as liaison within the Alaska Library Consortium.

11. Perform opening and closing procedures for the library during evening or weekend duty. Act as Person-In-Charge as assigned to monitor the facilitate safety, smooth operation and security of facility, grounds, and resources, reporting incidents and problems to those responsible as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university or college.

2. Two years of recent experience as a professional cataloger. Prefer experience using RDA, or AACR2. Evidence of recent concentrated coursework in cataloging and two years of experience as a professional librarian may substitute.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging tools and standards including, but not limited to AACR2, RDA, MARC21, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, OCLC bibliographic formats and standards and LC name and subject authorities. Familiarity with adapting bibliographic records for electronic content, preferred. Experience with MarcEdit, preferred.

2. Ability to effectively classify library materials, create accurate and thorough MARC descriptions of print and non-book material, and provide creative solutions to more complex Technical Services issues.

3. Experience in the selection of library materials and knowledge of selection trends and issues.

4. Working knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft software, online resources, personal electronic devices, and automated library systems, preferably SirsiDynix. Ability to use printers, copiers and any other equipment commonly used in an office environment.

5. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision, recognize and set priorities to organize and coordinate own tasks and within a leadership role in a team environment.

6. Experience in effective communication, both written and orally, with co-workers and public.

7. Ability to work efficiently with accuracy and attention to detail.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Private/general office where conditions are pleasant; good, clean conditions, where accidents/hazards are negligible; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling (26-50lbs).
