Hours of Work:11-month position at 40 hours per week (July off)

SUMMARY

The incumbent will provide support services and enrichment activities to Alaska Native and American Indian students, both primary and secondary grades and their families to address barriers to the students’ academic achievement. This entails closely collaborating with other JOM and school staff. 

JOB DUTIES:

  • Works collaboratively with school staff under the guidance of the principal or principal designee.
  • Reviews student data in current data systemon a regular basis to identify targeted students and monitor student attendance, academic strengths, and weakness. 
  • Helps identify and advocate for students with special needs and refers through proper channels for assistance.
  • Provides outreach and connection to FNSBSD services and community agencies, with parental support, to address student physical, social, and emotional needs.
  • Builds relationships with the most important partner in child’s education, families/guardians.
  • Invites and encourages families to be more actively involved in their child’s education by providing services and enrichment activities to promote family engagement, including skill building events.
  • Advises student leadership and facilitates student input and direction. 
  • Attends school meetings, i.e., IEP, disciplinary, parent-teacher conferences, if requested, to provide advocacy and support, as appropriate
  • Creates and maintains accurate records of program services, including entering activity logs in current data system on a weekly basis. 
  • Completes monthly reports to JOM director.
  • Attends staff meetings, as an integral part of the school staff, and FNA meetings
  • Acts as a resource person for students, tutors, teachers, and families by assisting in identifying problems and possible solutions, assisting teachers by arranging conferences with parents/families, and providing follow-up services as needed.
  • Works within the school system and abides by the policies guiding the school community.
  • Acts promptly on referrals from parents/guardians, counselors, staff members, and district administrators.
  • Maintains client and family confidentiality according to FERPA. Adheres to Code of Ethics and to confidentiality requirements as outlined in 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPPA.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of community resources and family services
  • Knowledge of customer service concepts and practices
  • Understanding and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles, and ability to work effectively with Alaska Native populations.
  • Skill in operating personal computer utilizing a variety of computer software.
  • Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, in addition to keeping accurate records, time management and organizational skills.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least two (2) years of college (AA or 48 credits) or must have passed the ParaPro Assessment if position is subject to Federal highly qualified requirements, Title I School
  • A combination of experience, education, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for degree requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • Experience working with the Native community.
  • Experience working with students in an instructional environment.

SPECIFICATIONS

Supervision Received:

Position receives direct supervision from JOM director; however, incumbent is expected to effectively perform day-to-day activity as denoted within job description. Work will be monitored through weekly meetings, monthly reports, and regular communication with your supervisor. General guidelines for operations are based on program requirements and the general policies and procedures of FNA.

No supervision requirements for this position.

Position Impact:

Impact at the program level is high. Program’s level of compliance with program standards is directly affected by the effective performance of duties, especially as they relate to providing services to students and families.

Contacts include, and are not limited to, volunteers, organizational staff, consumers, and outside agencies.
