About the role: Vice President, Strategy & Portfolio Management Everest Information Technology is currently seeking a Vice President for IT Strategy & Portfolio Management leader to join our Corporate Applications and Services organization. The is a key cross-functional management role that is focused on pivotal IT Strategy, Roadmap, Governance, Planning, Budgeting and execution of investment portfolio through demand management, resource management and financial management. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Corporate Applications and Services, who reports to the Everest Group’s Global CIO, this newly created role will play a critical part in leading IT’s transformation to a strong business-oriented function with – a clear strategic vision, recognized delivery excellence, sound portfolio management discipline with tight alignment to business’ strategic and operational goals. This position focuses on ensuring that the IT organization is tightly aligned with critical business and technology imperatives. A key success responsibility will be driving operational focus demonstrating that IT is progressing its strategic roadmap through governance, planning, organizational processes, controls, and performance management. Everest is increasing its investment in technology and, as a change agent, this role is an opportunity to deliver business value and mature core IT portfolio management capabilities thereby enhancing IT’s delivery confidence, capacity, and certainty. Key outcomes would include strengthening business engagement alignment, improving delivery predictability and agility in partnership with Delivery leaders. Understands positional authority but is capable of leading by influence. What You’ll Do Everest is growing and IT’s capital portfolio is also growing. You will partner closely with senior leaders in IT in evolving technology vision, multi-year strategy and direction for IT. Primary responsibilities are: Refreshing 5-year IT strategy and associated strategic objectives Shaping Annual Planning and Budgeting vis-a-vis 5-year plans for Investment Demand and Productions Operations Executing and monitoring roadmap progress against IT Strategy, organizational objectives and life-cycle of investments and initiatives. Establishing best practices to deliver on investment initiatives with predictability and consistency Leading and planning investment portfolio and prioritization while driving corrective actions to ensure key outcomes through multiple levels of governance (program, divisional and executive) Further developing a strategic portfolio management capability to govern the prioritization & planning, ensure execution readiness & predictability while increasing IT agility & velocity in alignment with the businesses Ensuring that technology is delivering against critical and large-scale multi-year initiatives, many of which have Board and Executive visibility Evolving from transactional project staffing and project execution to scaling a strategic portfolio management capability across IT portfolios and lines-of-business Driving the implementation of critical processes as part of enhancing “building” and “running” IT Resource/Capacity Management - Identify, prioritize, and coordinate resources within and across portfolios to maximize utilization Demand Management – Institutionalize demand capture, prioritization and approval through line-of-business Governance and readiness processes Dependency Management – Plan and coordinate cross-portfolio interdependencies and proactively mitigate risk Financial Management – Ensure that IT achieves financial objectives in partnership with Finance and CIO directs. This requires proactive, timely and accurate monthly forecasting, variance analysis and portfolio adjustments. IT Balanced Scorecard – Data to steer IT and gauge progress against objectives Establishing and applying consistent system development lifecycle methodologies and standards, including the move to new methodologies (e.g. agile) Working closely with the solution delivery leaders to drive and facilitate effective collaboration and communications between the IT organization and the business communities Ensuring timely planning and increasing execution predictability of the portfolio through: Execution monitoring through operating reviews, audits Portfolio analyses to track velocity against planned efforts Proactive mitigation of annual & monthly financial variances Planning and coordination of cross-portfolio interdependencies Risk monitoring and mitigation at the portfolio level Coaching and intervention to course-correct delivery Staying current with technology benchmarks against external operations and ensuring progress of our position relative to the industry Partnering with transformation office and senior IT leaders, reporting to the CIO, to drive continuous improvement across technology Partnering with Group PMO to provide oversight and transparency on the performance of the technology operation and project investment plans This unique role requires forethought, coordination across IT and business, rigorous insight into delivery progress and challenges. Ultimately, you will partner with business and IT stakeholders throughout Everest and across all levels of the organization. You will also create and evolve a Portfolio and Project Management chapter (Community-of-Practice) that establishes practice consistency, defines career paths and enables uplifting of traditional project management as well as contemporary agile delivery competencies. A critical success factor for this role will be the ability to institutionalize consistent and disciplined delivery blueprint, governance structure and communications. Under this function, IT will also execute operational excellence initiatives targeted to improve IT services and evolve to our target operating model. Key competencies are: Developing trust-based relationships Strategic and critical thinking to ultimately deliver business capabilities at-pace and against increasing scale Leading and managing through influence and direct authority Outcome-oriented approach to model behaviors of strong planning, execution and problem-solving across the company Balance of independence and collaboration to progress against objectives Business knowledge and customer-oriented judgment to drive alignment at governance forums Creating a culture of continuous improvement for value creation Finally, you will partner with Corporate Application & Services peers in enhancing the “running of IT business” across functions with global mandate such as Corporate Systems (Solution Delivery), Production Operations, Quality Assurance, Vendor Management & Sourcing, Financial Management, Talent/Workforce Management. You will assist in establishing and managing to IT performance benchmarks ultimately helping technology team innovate and differentiate Everest in the marketplace. What you’ll need 15 years in an Information Technology related field, ideally with experience in the financial services and/or insurance industry. Seven or more years of leadership responsibilities, including strategy, roadmap, planning and budgeting Building and shaping strategic portfolio management as a capability and function across the enterprise Experience in business/industry (beyond IT), managing cross-functional teams or projects, and influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions, with the ability to differentiate between a relevant trend and hype Strong change agent with the ability to improve operational efficiency and service delivery across the IT organization Ability to envision and think strategically but execute with pragmatism Excellent executive-ready and organizational communications through direct and indirect development of presentations, business cases and narratives. Ability to explain technology solutions in business terms, establish rapport and persuade others.
