Evansville Day School (Day School), in partnership with parents, offers a student-centered, college preparatory program supported by a challenging and comprehensive curriculum that encourages each student from Junior Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 to strive for excellence in mind, body, and human spirit. EDS was founded in 1946 and remains the only independent school in the Southwest Indiana (tri-state) region. The school enrolls approximately 300 students and boasts a 40- acre wooded campus, an impressively diverse student body, and 100% four-year college placement.

Job Summary: Middle School Humanities at Day School encompasses English Language Arts and Social Studies for grades 5 through 8. In 2024-2025, this role will focus primarily on English for grades 6 and 7 and social studies for grade 5. The Day School English program develops students’ abilities to use the English language through reading, literary analysis, and writing. Students also focus on grammar and writing conventions in order to develop composition and critical thinking skills. Day School’s Humanities Department embraces a variety of text and media to reach our diverse student population and foster a global perspective. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach four sections of Middle School English and two sections of Middle School social studies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement an effective, engaging, and meaningful Middle School Humanities scope and sequence that is vertically and horizontally aligned.
  • Employ inclusive and innovative instructional and assessment methods.
  • Create a warm and well-structured learning environment with consistent routines and high expectations that encourages and supports intellectual risk-taking and growth.
  • Provide timely individualized feedback to students.
  • Communicate proactively with families.
  • Serve as an advisor to middle school students.
  • Supervise students as assigned by Division Head.
  • Contribute to the life of Day School by coaching and/or leading student clubs and activities.
  • Be a visible presence at middle school events.
  • Actively participate in the Humanities department.
  • Actively participate in faculty meetings and professional development.
  • Model a commitment to lifelong learning and growth.
  • Uphold Day School’s Mission and core values.

Other duties may be assigned by the Head of School, Assistant Head of School, or Division Head.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree, preferred.
  • Experience teaching middle school English, preferred.
  • Knowledgeable about the developmental needs of middle school students.
  • Knowledgeable about reading and writing instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire students.
  • Exceptional written and oral skills.
  • Committed to collaboration and innovation.
