REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

  • One (1) year of experience as a professional nurse in a hospital or other institution, clinic, or medical center,

LICENSE:

  • Registration as a professional nurse in the State of New Jersey.
  • Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

SPECIAL NOTE: Appointee must possess the ability to physically lift, move, and position clients as needed.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of nursing techniques, routines, and methods as applied in hospitals and other institutions.
  • Ability to organize assigned professional nursing and supervisory work and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to assign and instruct subordinate nursing and care personnel assigned to the area and to supervise the performance of their work.
  • Ability to supervise the proper care and custody of patients and/or inmates and to see that the orders of the medical staff are carried out.
  • Ability to instruct and supervise the training of student nurses and other members of the attending staff in approved routines, procedures, and precautions.
  • Ability to encourage a proper professional attitude among the members of the nursing staff.
  • Ability to prepare and supervise the preparation of accurate and detailed clinical, medical, and other records and reports.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  • Organizes assigned nursing work and develops effective work methods,
  • Provides suitable assignments and instructions to the staff nurses, student nurses, occupational health nurses, and other members of the attending and clerical staff in an assigned area and supervises the performance of their work.
  • Sees that residents or patients are properly tended and that the orders of the medical or treatment staff are carried out and recorded; keeps all concerned units and staff appraised of any changes made by medical staff.
  • If assigned to a residential institution, instructs student nurses and members of the attending staff in the approved hospital routines, methods, procedures and precautions, including the setting up of trays, the serving of meals, the feeding of patients, the bathing and dressing of patients, the changing of bed linens, the sterilization of equipment of varied types, the taking and recording of temperatures, and the giving and recording of medication and treatment.
  • Plans, organizes, and assigns the work of the organizational unit and evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of subordinates.
  • Supervises and ensures the cleanliness, sanitation, order, safety, and discipline within the assigned area.
  • Assists physicians with examinations of patients.
  • Admits and discharges patients into and from the assigned area and maintains and supervises the maintenance of necessary records.
  • Promotes a professional attitude among the members of the nursing staff.
  • If assigned to a clinic or medical center, instructs student nurses, subordinate nurses, and members of the attending staff in the routines, methods, procedures, and precautions approved by the clinic or medical center in administering medical assistance and/or guidance pertaining to the dispensing of medicine, in maintaining confidential federal and state medical records and files, in the taking and
  • recording of temperatures, and the giving and recording of medication and treatment.
  • Assumes the responsibility for the care, physical and mental well being, safety and, in some instances, the custody of patients, inmates, and/or residents.
  • Prepares clear, sound, accurate, and professionally detailed clinical and other reports.
  • Maintains and supervises the maintenance of essential records and files.
  • Prepares and dispenses daily take-home medication to patients.
  • Assists in the evaluation of candidates for treatment in the clinic system.
  • Assists the residents or patients and their families in understanding their condition or illness.
  • Assumes responsibility of the unit in absence of nursing supervisor.
  • Makes appointments for residents or patients with consulting physicians, arranges transportation, and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Contributes as a member of the team in the determination of treatment goals; participates and involves the resident in goal planning sessions.
  • If assigned to a residential institution, develops and initiates various group activities with residents such as reality orientation, activity of daily living programs, and remotivation sessions.
  • If assigned to a residential institution, accompanies an individual resident or a group of residents on community trips as part of resocialization, remotivation, and community re-entry preparation programs.
  • Counsels residents concerning their medications by utilizing medication fact sheets, as required, in area of assignment.
  • If assigned to a residential institution, teaches resident education classes in areas of physical health care, good grooming, hygiene, and personal appearance.
  • May be required to engage in lifting clients when working in a setting which provides direct services to clients who are non- ambulant, or who are semi-ambulant and/or have severe physical handicaps.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
