What's the role?Etsy is hiring a Senior Director, Strategy & Operations - Product & Engineering to lead strategy development and execution for the teams led by Etsy’s CPO and CTO. This position is responsible for both the development and communication of the Org’s vision and strategy, and the planning, resourcing, coordination and program management required to help our squads turn strategy into action. In addition, the role serves as an advocate and dependency manager for the CPO and CTO’s Org and other functions: Marketing, Operations, Legal, Finance, and People & Workplace. The role is a people manager role, reporting into the Head of Strategy & Operations.
This person has a passion for strategy development, investment prioritization, and deliberate execution at scale! They cultivate an undogmatic curiosity about agile software development principles, organizational design, and progressive team management practices. They are an adept communicator and collaborator who gets teams to achieve their full potential. Most importantly, they have a track-record of inspiring widespread organizational change.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Head of Strategy & Operations. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What does the day-to-day look like?
  • Stand up, operate, optimize, systems and processes that together form an operating rhythm that drives strategy-setting, and product development for the CPO, CTO and their leadership team
  • Drive Strategic & Financial Planning (SFP), including trade-off negotiations with partners
  • Partner with SF&A, HRBP and Talent to drive always-on headcount planning, budgeting, recruiting priorities, talent market expansion, and talent pipeline building (FTEs, contractors, apprentices, interns)
  • Ensure that our goal setting program (OKRs) creates organizational focus, and inspires teams to innovate
  • Proactively plan how meeting time is spent by the CPO & CTO’s leadership team, ensuring agendas are relevant and focused, and actions and insights are shared. This pertains to both frequently recurring leadership meetings and less frequent leadership off-sites
  • Develop and operate Product and Eng-specific learning programs (e.g. Onboarding, Mentorship, Rotations, Code Mosaic, Code as Craft, Leadership as Craft, ML Training, etc.)
  • Direct the Product & Eng Program Management team toward the most vital and collaboration-intensive programs to accelerate their time to completion, addressing cross and roadblocks and dependencies as needed
  • Lead the Orgs’ internal communications forums, channels, and knowledge management platforms to help employees find the information they need to do their job (e.g. Patchwork, All Hands and Q&A, CPO & CTO Roundtables, Newsletters, Product & Engineering Hub, Eng Thunder, etc)
  • When needed, support the preparation of Board presentations
  • Manage and mentor your team members to help them develop into future leaders
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.
Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
  • 10 years of experience in Product, Engineering and/or Design operations, program management, or product management in a dynamic, fast-growing environment
  • Significant experience in strategy development, research and analysis, and opportunity sizing
  • Systems thinker, dot connector and harmonizer
  • Adept at spotting, defining and addressing unconstrained problems and finding solutions to them quickly (through individual work, delegation, collaboration, iteration)
  • Experience managing a large team of project and program managers to act quickly & stealthily, with low bureaucracy
  • Experience inspiring change that resulted in increased speed, impact and efficiency for 1,000 organizations
  • Verbally communicate and write in a way that builds trust at every org level, from C-suite to squad
  • Skilled at influencing outcomes and people without reporting lines
  • Adopts an agile approach that focuses on continuous improvement, and waste elimination when beneficial
  • Demonstrated curiosity in new operational and organizational theories, software development, emergent technologies, and eCommerce trends
  • Experience working with a marketplace business model is a plus
