Who we are?Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan.The Upper School, located in the Bronx, is comprised of approximately 600 students and 80 faculty members.

Position SummaryCurrently, we are seeking a one-year leave replacement position for an Upper School English Teacher. This will be a .75FTE and begin on September 1, 2024. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about a diversity of subject material, with an emphasis on writing pedagogy and practices. The candidate should have a background in literary analysis and strong familiarity with 9th-grade English (Literature Survey) & World Literature, with an ability to competently teach texts that and authors who wrestle from multiple perspectives with themes including but not limited to age, gender, race, socio-economic status, ability, sexual orientation, religion, and ethnicity. The ideal candidate also possesses a background and teaching experience in two (2) of the following four (4) areas: Latin American Literature, Caribbean Literature, Native American Literature, and Queer Literature, particularly with expertise and experience teaching Latin American Literature. 

The hiring range for this position is $51,159-$121,437 (subject to union negotiations).Responsibilitiesinclude teaching a course load of at least 3 sections per semester; attending faculty meetings; and other shared Upper School and English Department-specific responsibilities.

Ideal candidates have experience employing a range of pedagogical approaches and will be excited by the opportunity to teach a diverse student body in a values-based community. The ideal candidate has also demonstrated a commitment to addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside the classroom. This candidate will have a collaborative approach with colleagues and have the ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback. A passion for working with upper school students, a flexible attitude and a commitment to lifelong learning are essential.

Position requirementsThe successful incumbent will possess:

• A Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred in English;

• Expertise in writing pedagogy and practices, and World Literature preferred;

• Expertise and experience in teaching two (2) of the four (4) areas required: Latin American Literature, Caribbean Literature, Native American Literature, and Queer Literature;

• A background or expertise in interdisciplinary collaboration and teaching preferred;

• An understanding of and commitment to cultural competency and how to support a diverse student population, especially through the teaching of texts that and authors who wrestle from multiple perspectives with themes including but not limited to age, gender, race, socio-economic status, ability, sexual orientation, religion, and ethnicity; 

• A minimum of 2 years of relevant teaching experience, preferably with upper school (high school) students;

• Proficiency with technology, including Smartboards, Google Suite, and apps;

• Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
