Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses - one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan. Ethical Culture School, located on the Upper West Side at 63rd Street and Central Park West, is comprised of approximately 450 students Pre-K through 5th Grade and 80 faculty members.

Position Summary
We are looking for passionate educators who are committed to progressive education, consider ethics to be at the core of their work with students and colleagues, and will contribute to the academic success of all students to join our community.

Ethical Culture Fieldston School is looking for a physical education associate teacher to work at our Ethical Culture division in Manhattan as a one year leave replacement. Employment as an Associate Teacher provides current Master’s degree candidates and recent Master’s program graduates the opportunity to learn under a seasoned classroom teacher and gain some hands-on experience in the classroom. Throughout an associate teacher’s time at ECFS, they will receive mentoring and experiences to prepare them for the work of a head teacher.
The physical education associate teacher will assist other teachers and substitutes for head teachers in their absence. Our program takes place inside the gym spaces and outside in the park in all seasons.
This is a one year position with a salary of $51,159 (subject to change based on union negotiations).

Responsibilities
Associate teachers work in pre-kindergarten through third-grade classes and are responsible for teaching physical education under the direction of the head teacher. They are also responsible for general classroom organizational duties, including taking attendance, family communication, classroom management, recess supervision, and helping to transition students between classes.

Requirements
The successful incumbent will possess:

  • A Physical Education Bachelor’s degree is required or enrolled in a Physical Education Master’s program;
  • Previous experience teaching physical education in pre-K through grade 5;
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice;
  • A commitment to progressive education as outlined on our website;
  • The ability to collaborate with a team of teachers;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and experience communicating with constituents in various racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups;
  • The ability to manage time effectively, prioritize various tasks, stay organized and calm in challenging situations;
  • Respect and appreciation for diversity in all of its forms;
  • The ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback;
  • Initiative, creativity, flexibility, and collaboration.
