ERT is Hiring an Ocean Monitoring/ Data Assimilation Scientist Near College Park, MD

Position Description
ERT is seeking a full-time scientist position to support ocean monitoring and ocean data assimilation tasks at the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), part of the National Weather Service (NWS), National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Tasks will focus on ocean monitoring and the influence of ocean observing platforms on the performance of ocean data assimilation systems.

Duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining real-time ocean monitoring data sets.
  • Developing graphical displays for ocean monitoring products.
  • A comparison of the in situ ocean data with model-based ocean analyses.
  • Conducting observing system experiments using ocean assimilation systems.

Required Skills

  • 15 years experience in oceanic or atmospheric data assimilation and/or modeling in a High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, Fortran90).
  • Proficiency in analyzing atmospheric and oceanic datasets.
  • Proficiency in UNIX and shell scripting and scientific software packages (e.g. NetCDF Climate Data Operators (CDO) and/or NetCDF Operators (NCO))
  • Familiarity with the Modular Ocean Model (MOM) infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with GRIB2 and BUFR data formats.
  • Experience in the design of sensitivity experiments to assess impact of observational data on ocean analysis.

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (Green card) and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to access applicable government systems and facilities.

Education
PhD in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, or related discipline, or equivalent.

Location
This position is eligible for up to 80% telework. Candidates must be able to work on site as needed at the National Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, MD, where they will work closely with scientists at CPC.
