Erlanger Health is Hiring a Medical Lab Assistant- Health Centers - Full-Time Near Chattanooga, TN

Job Summary:

Primary duties include collection of lab specimens, preparation of specimens for processing for transport to reference labs, processing of waived and moderately complex lab tests, and preparing and maintaining records of all results reported. Performs all quality controls in lab. Responsible for completing all lab proficiency testing. Supports other practice operations as assigned by the Clinical Practice Manager or Administrator.

This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State of Tennessee/Georgia guidelines. Is trained and assigned (as per their role and responsibilities) to coordinate care for patients and is trained and assigned to support patients/families/caregivers in self-management, self-efficacy and behavior change. Is trained and assigned (as per their role and responsibilities) to manage the practices' patient population. Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation.

Department Position Summary:

The Medical Lab Assistant provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction of the Clinical Services Director, Administrator, or physician. The MLA works in a high stress environment. Must have the ability to assess patients and determine validity and quality of venipuncture and capillary sites. Answers phones and disseminates lab information to other medical personnel. Able to enter physician orders into the computer system and enter test results into the patient's electronic medical record. Must have; a strong ability to prioritize workload. knowledge of lab quality regulation and knowledge of process of performing proficiency tests. Maintains and manages all laboratory documentation and recordkeeping. Responsible for overall management and daily operation of the lab and all components of the lab.

The Medical Lab Assistant performs testing of body fluids to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease under the direction of the Lab Director. He/she works closely with team members in an atmosphere of continuous quality improvement. He/she performs other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director or Management.

The Medical Lab Assistant is also responsible for centrifugation and preparation of blood, urine and other body fluids for processing and distributes these specimens to the proper work areas. He/she prepares specimens for transport to reference labs, utilizes the computer to print batch logs for interfacing orders, and monitors the pending log for outstanding specimens. This employee assists with the instruction of new laboratory personnel relative to the area, and is involved in collection of blood specimens. He/She also assists in the ordering of supplies in storeroom, and performs general laboratory tasks such as cleaning of counter tops, centrifuges, refrigerators, and documentation of these tasks.

The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his or her assigned department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures. The employee will assist in the delivery of primary healthcare and patient care management under the direction of the physician or nurse.
