Erie Elementary Charter School (EECS) is built on the strong foundation of the nationally accredited Childcare program at Erie Neighborhood House, a progressive social service agency in Chicago's West Town community. Located in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, EECS opened in September 2005 serving 80 students in kindergarten and first grade. Currently the school has 415 students, grades K-8.

Mission

EECS is a community where students, parents and educators work together to develop children who are confident in their culture and ethnic origin, bi-literate in Spanish and English, achieve academic excellence, and firmly placed on a path to higher education.

Teachers at EECS have the most immediate impact on the school’s ability to realize its mission. EECS currently has an opening for a 3rd Grade Dual Language Lead Teacher. This teacher is responsible for leading the classroom in the education and general development of the children, following the school’s standards and philosophies.

Position Responsibilities

Curriculum and Design, Instruction and Student Assessment

Work collaboratively with partner teachers to:

  • Design and implement differentiated curriculum aligned with school standards
  • Design and frequently administer rigorous, standards-based, authentic assessments
  • Use the curriculum provided by the school as primary curriculum and supplement with appropriate resources
  • Use data-based inquiry to inform practices.
  • Provide a learning environment that encourages and motivates ALL students to learn
  • Possess a “do what it takes’ mentality to ensure the success of each of his/her students

Lead instruction in a dual language model, which is focused on developing bilingualism and bi-literacy in both Spanish and English by:

  • Teaching curriculum: Literacy in both languages; math, science, and social studies taught in Spanish
  • Identifying curriculum and assessment that meet the students’ levels of Spanish and English language proficiency.
  • Designing differentiated instruction based on the students’ levels of Spanish and English language proficiency
  • Collaborating with the other teachers to develop students’ Spanish literacy skills that will reinforce the literacy skills that they are already learning in English

Partnering with Students and Families

  • Work collaboratively with parents by phone or email on a regular basis to share both positive and negative feedback about their child, which may include doing home visits
  • Respond promptly by telephone or email to parent questions and concerns
  • Attend occasional after-school or weekend events such as potluck dinners, student performances, and other school related events

Building of School Culture

  • Frequently communicate the school’s mission to children and families.
  • Acknowledge each student’s bilingual and bicultural experience as an asset for the child’s own development and that of the other students
  • Adhere to school academic and disciplinary protocols
  • Demonstrate strong and effective classroom management using Responsive Classroom
  • Hold yourself and your students to the highest academic and personal standards

Maintenance of Organizational Culture

  • Collaborate with other teachers and the principal to advance the school’s mission.

Continually improve teaching by:

  • Initiating and pursuing professional development opportunities both inside and outside of the school
  • Being open to constructive feedback

  • Attend all staff meetings and additional meetings as needed; including in-services, open houses and parent conferences
  • Willingness to make your teaching practice public within the school
