Summary of Duties:Implements alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) education utilizing evidence-based
curricula and research informed materials to individuals across the lifespan. S/he will conduct
substance related prevention education training, workshops and in-services in the community,
professional organizations and schools. The Prevention Educator will work collaboratively with
schools, other agency programs and staff members to promote the mission of The Council and
will assure linkage to appropriate community resources consistent with agency’s goals,
community, school and family needs. The Prevention Educator is accountable to and supervised
by the Director of Programs.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:- Implement ATOD education, intervention and referral services that are age and
experimentally appropriate.
- Works with the Director of Programs and other The Prevention Council staff to assist in
the marketing of the agency programming and services.
- Establish positive relationships with community and school groups/administration and
allied professionals.
- Assists in the evaluation of the agency’s programs under the direct supervision of the
Director of Programs.
- Actively participates in regular staff meetings, other agency and community meetings,
including those on a State and County level, and other community meetings as requested
by the Director of Programs and/or Executive Director.
- Works collaboratively with other agency programs and personnel and provides referrals
to The Prevention Council programs and/or outside agencies when needed.
- Works cooperatively with other substance abuse prevention programs in the community.
- Attend local health fairs.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
- Thorough knowledge of alcoholism and other substance abuse.
Have an informed perspective on social equity and demonstrate cultural competence and
knowledge
of trauma informed interventions and services.
- Ability to create engaging and informative presentations.
- Experience and comfortable with public speaking recognizing the importance of verbal and
Non-verbal communication.
- Strong written, verbal and organizational skills, including the ability to relate to adolescents
and varied groups in the community.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other staff members and with staff of other agencies.
- Experience and good knowledge of child/human development and of group dynamics.
- Knowledge of service system and resources available in the community.
- Excellent presentation skills: the ability to plan, prepare, facilitate and process group
presentations for classroom and other larger student or adult community groups.
- Skills and experience with working individuals one-on-one is a bonus.
- Able to maintain limits of confidentiality.
- Computer literacy with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, Power Point and the Internet.
QUALIFICATIONS:Master’s degree in Human Services field (Social Work, Counseling, Psychology) or Education
with at least two years’ experience in health, mental health or ATOD abuse services or related
field experience in education, public speaking, counseling or group work.
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Education or Human Services, plus at least five years’ experience in health,
mental health or ATOD abuse services or related field experience in education, public speaking,
counseling or group work.
OR
Credentialed Prevention Specialist or Credentialed Prevention Professional preferred. (CASAC
acceptable)
