Description

The Episcopal School of Dallas prepares young men and women for lives of intellectual discovery, integrity, and purpose. Founded in 1974 by The Reverend Stephen B. Swann with eight seventh-grade students, today ESD educates and inspires 1,150 students in grades beginner (age 3) through grade 12. ESD is located in Dallas, a modern metropolis of North Texas, and a commercial and cultural hub in the region.

At the heart of ESD are talented and compassionate faculty and staff who are the backbone of our institution and paramount to the school's success. They adeptly balance rigorous, college preparatory coursework with understanding and nurturing of the whole child. Classes are small, with an overall student-teacher ratio of 7:1. ESD employees are lifelong learners, and the school invests nearly $500,000 in professional development annually. More than 250 serve the ESD community and all are appreciated and respected for their individual and collective contributions.

Purpose: The Assistant Athletic Trainer will assist the Head Athletic Trainer with providing prevention, care, rehabilitation, and coverage for all middle school and upper school-sponsored sports. Provide athletic training services for all middle and upper school-home contests, along with varsity football away games. Assist in the development of and oversee a student athletic trainer program.

Essential Functions:

Provide prevention, care, and rehabilitation services for ESD athletics

  • Injury Prevention
  • Provide injury preventive measures for home and visiting teams
  • Application of tape and braces when applicable for injury prevention
  • Ensure coaches are aware of weather policies to ensure safety of ESD athletes
  • Maintain first-aid and emergency equipment should an emergency arise
  • Maintain knowledge base regarding current trends in sports medicine
  • Injury Care and Rehabilitation
  • Evaluate athletic injuries sustained during ESD athletic competitions and/or practices
  • Decide on best method of care for evaluated injuries
  • Develop proper rehabilitation protocols based on current trends and methods
  • Design functional return-to-play protocols to ensure athletes return safely to their respective sport
  • Athlete Safety
  • Develop and maintain heat and cold policy for outdoor sports
  • Coordinates concussion management policy and administer ImPACT/baseline testing and follow-up testing
  • Establish clear first-aid and emergency procedures
  • Determine sport coverage priority system based on potential for injury
  • Identifies when medical assistance and/or an ambulance is needed
  • Identify and establish a relationship with physicians (concussion, orthopedic, dental, plastic surgeon, family physician, etc)
  • Arranges team physician coverage for home contests when needed

Maintain documentation of health records

  • Daily Treatments & Injury tracking
  • Maintains medical documentation of daily treatments and injury progression
  • Administer ImPACT baseline and follow-up testing for concussion injuries
  • Ensure that appropriate athletes have current baseline tests

Communication

  • Internal and External communication
  • Communicates with the athletic department on a regular basis
  • Maintains a direct line of communication with the student-athlete(s)
  • Contacts/communicates with physicians and specialist as needed
  • Communicates with athletic coaches and officials when necessary on a regular basis
  • Communicate with strength and conditioning coaches regarding athletic injuries, and protocols
  • Contacts administration, parents, teachers, and nurse(s) as necessary
  • Communicate daily with Head Athletic Trainer

Abuse Risk Management Standards:

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students
  • Attends required abuse risk management training
  • Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising students
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements

Working Environment:

  • Regular lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift 100lbs, regularly lift 20-50lbs.
  • Generally, 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.
  • Temperature variations (heat in August/September; cold November-March)
  • Off-site travel to include rustic environments and occasional overnight trips.
  • Generally, a hazard-free environment.

Requirements

  • Licensed in the State of Texas by the State Board of Health as an Athletic Trainer
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association
  • Bachelor's Degree in athletic training from an accredited program required; Master's degree preferred
  • Certified in First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Two years of Athletic Training experience preferred
  • Ability to make quick decisions in a life-threatening situation
  • Must have organizational, supervisory, and management skills
  • Must be able to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet scheduled deadlines
  • Must have good team-building skills
  • Must have budgeting, maintenance, and purchasing skills
  • Must have the ability to assess student needs and be able to respond to those needs effectively
  • Should have good verbal and interpersonal skills
