Environmental Conservation, Department of is Hiring an Environmental Engineering Technician 1 Near Tarrytown, NY

Minimum Qualifications

Open-Competitive:
Four years of experience in technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, or sanitary engineering technology; environmental technology; geology or geology technology; or as a surveyor or a drafter;
OR graduation from high school and one year of qualifying experience;
OR graduation from a high school technical education program in aeronautics, architectural drafting, chemistry, electricity, electronics, mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design, technical instrumentation and control systems, or computer circuitry;
OR 18 college semester credit hours in any combination of the following: engineering, geology, environmental science, natural or physical science, drafting, mathematics, or surveying.

Duties Description

The technician will be trained to work in the following areas of R3’s Water Program including State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permitting and compliance, stormwater, complaint response, and water quality assessment. Duties may include traveling up to 5 days/week. The ability to traverse all types of terrain in all weather conditions is required. Develop comments and questions on plans, reports and applications as they relate to applicable regulations. Conduct water sampling and be able to use various monitoring equipment. Assist in enforcement cases, including development of referrals and enforcement documents. Managing records, data entry, and analyzing and preparing reports for internal and external parties. Maintain electronic and hard copy facility records and files in an accurate and orderly manner. Participate in outreach and events.
Key duties include:
1- Conduct inspections of SPDES facilities and CAFO, MS4, MSGP, and construction GP sites throughout the Region and perform complaint response. Prepare inspection reports and follow up on compliance issues. Coordinate with other regional programs.
2- Assists in the review of technical documents for completeness and conformance with regulations.
3- Assist with enforcement cases, including development of referrals, enforcement documents, and provide testimony, if necessary. Coordinate Water Compliance records.
4- Conduct sampling and be able to use various monitoring equipment. Perform water quality assessment.
5- Participate in technical meetings and outreach events.

Additional Comments

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/2025. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
