Location: Charlotte, NC
Salary range : $70,000 - 85,000
REPORTS TO : Senior Director, Mechanical Engineering
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : The Product Design Engineer is directly responsible for coordinating engineering projects from concept to production involving new product development, concurrent engineering improvement/enhancement, and manufacturing implementation with emphasis in design, analysis, detailing, layout and testing. The Product Design Engineer initiates engineering testing for product performance, design accuracy, longevity, and environmental durability. This position requires communication with customers, suppliers, manufacturing, quality, and sales on technical issues. Some travel may be required.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Bachelors degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology is required
- 2 years of product design and thorough understanding of materials, linear and nonlinear behavior of materials, fatigue and corrosion
- Proficiency with MS Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to read and interpret blue print and other engineer drawings
- Knowledge of rubber compounds, fatigue characteristics of rubber compounds
- Knowledge of stress analysis of structural components using classical and finite element analysis (FEA) methods considering static and dynamic loadings
- Utilization of CAD/3-D Modeling Software
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective leadership skills, problem solving and decision making skills
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage workload
- Develop and maintain current product knowledge
- Ability to work with tact and professionalism towards customers and vendors
- Ability to work with minimum supervision
- Perform the design and analysis of product components. Create design layouts, assembly drawings, bills of material, and tolerance stack-ups using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software
- Perform detailed analysis of brake components and assemblies considering operating loads and induced loads as they affect the life of the component or assembly using classical and FEA methods
- Initiates and process Engineering Project Requests (EPR), Engineering Tests Requests (ETR) for product testing, and documents Engineering Change Requests (ECR). Process and document engineering changes by completing an Engineering Change Notice (ECN)
- Coordinate design review meetings
- Review inspection results and disposition of ISIRs being performed on components submitted from suppliers for production approval
- Review, approve, or disapproved deviation requests to ensure that the requests does not adversely affect fit, form, function, and / or safety
- Update and maintain drawings as required by an ECR or customer specification green sheet
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing on new or rework of tools for new and current parts. Assess supplier capability, review new component design, and product/component improvement
- Interface with sales, customers, quality assurance, manufacturing, purchasing, and suppliers for product and process enhancement
- Assist the Engineering Management to maintain, revise, and edit procedures used in the engineering process

Jobs are sedentary if walking and/or standing is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. The worker is subject to regular use of computer and other office equipment and occasionally will use gauges, tools, and other measuring devices. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks.
