One-on-One Aides (Paraprofessionals) work with children who possess special needs, one-on-one. They support the academic and social success of these children by providing 1:1 paraprofessional services throughout the school day, guided by a student's teachers. We are looking for a permanent building sub to be both a Special Education Substitute Teacher and a Substitute Paraprofessional.

Assistant teaching or substituting with us is an entre' to landing a full-time lead teaching position.

We add a grade level and hire approximately 10 new lead teachers each year. School leaders use assistant teaching and permanent subs as an opportunity to see potential lead teacher hires in action. They observe assistant teachers and subs in the classroom and include assistant teachers and subs in teacher professional development initiatives, significantly advancing an assistant teacher's prospects for being hired as a full-time lead teacher. (Indeed, each year several formerly assistant teachers and/or subs have been promoted to a lead teacher position.)

Given the above, assistant teachers and subs are generally expected to have the capacity to pick-up a lesson plan and deliver first-rate instruction if a teacher is out so that the learning progress of our students will not miss a beat.

If you believe you are ready to lead a classroom and are looking for an opportunity where you can showcase your high-level skills and land a full-time position, you should apply for this position.

One-On-One Aide/Paraprofessional Responsibilities:

  • Assist a student's teachers in providing classroom accommodations;
  • Collaborate with our special education coordinator and with a student's teachers by implementing interventions they have designed to support the student and to improve student focus and behavior;
  • Reinforce and model Empowerment Academy's core values and standards of behavior for your students, following the example of our school leaders, teachers and other school staff;
  • Receive coaching positively and participate in professional development activities designed by school leaders to improve your professional practice, especially as it relates to student behavioral management, student instruction, student social development and school culture;
  • When working with a student on an academic exercise, do not short-circuit student thinking by providing the answer, such as through spelling out a word. Help the student grow by challenging the student to use skills that have been learned, such as phonetically sounding out the letters in a word.
  • Perform other duties to support the ongoing development of a student, classroom, or our school environment, as deemed appropriate by our teachers, special education coordinator, and school leadership.
  • Be extremely flexible and fill other roles as needed, as would a substitute.
  • Understand that your schedule may change day to day.

As equal opportunity employers, BelovED and Empowerment Academy hire without consideration to race, religion, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, or disability.

Requirements

Required Certifications / Qualifications

A substitute teaching certificate is required. Candidates must, at minimum, have completed 2 years of college and possess an Associate’s or higher degree. Possessing a BA, or possessing 60 college credits and working towards a Bachelor’s Degree and/or some teaching experience would be a major plus. It is also important to have good communications skills, basic administrative skills, and to be a team player who possesses maturity, a strong work ethic, and a whatever-it-takes to help children attitude.

We generally seek the same qualities in assistant teachers and permanent subs that we seek in lead teachers.

Therefore, assistant teacher and sub candidates should hold a certificate of eligibility for teaching in elementary school grades. (Exceptions may be made.)

Important Personal Qualities:

  • A desire to work with special needs children and a commitment to the academic and social growth of the children with whom you work;
  • A commitment to the mission and goals of the school, including its goal of preparing every student for college and developing every student's values and character;
  • Belief in a structured and predictable environment for children and a commitment to education standards, statewide testing, and accountability;
  • A willingness to be an authority in the classroom and enforce the rules; and
  • A commitment to building student relationships and engaging parents/guardians in their children’s education.

Benefits

Teacher Supports

Sample teacher supports include:

  • A teacher coach, career-long professional development assistance and grade-level professional learning community support;
  • A research-based curriculum and supporting curricular materials (you will have the freedom to develop your own, but after a full day in the classroom, you may appreciate not always having to develop learning objectives and curricular resources from scratch);
  • High-quality formative assessments, aligned with our curriculum, that will help you immediately identify when students in your class have not achieved mastery of a skill, concept, or knowledge item;
  • Full-time reading and math specialists who will be available to tutor students who are struggling to master an essential skill, and social workers who will be available to help students struggling with outside problems;
  • The staffing of our afterschool program by Academic Tutors, so we can limit the length of our teachers’ work-days;
  • Abundant planning periods that provide teachers an opportunity to prepare up-coming lessons during the school day.

As an equal opportunity employer, Empowerment Academy hires without consideration to race, religion, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, or disability.

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Family Leave (Maternity, Paternity)
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Training & Development
