Position Summary

The DEA & Customer Compliance at Empower plays a pivotal role in upholding the highest standards of regulatory compliance within our 503A Compounding Pharmacy and 503B Outsourcing Facility, directly reporting to the VP of Compliance. This critical position encompasses comprehensive oversight of DEA regulations and management of customer compliance, ensuring our operations meet the stringent guidelines set forth by regulatory bodies.

The Director is tasked with managing the customer compliance landscape, from driving account reviews to leading a team dedicated to maintaining the integrity and compliance of customer interactions. This involves establishing rigorous criteria for account setups, documenting the approval or denial process, and actively engaging with customers to educate and ensure compliance.

The role demands a proactive approach to compliance, including the development of internal and external training programs focused on licensing requirements and the implementation of provider licensing software to enhance efficiency. Collaboration with sales, IT, and other teams is crucial to integrate compliance initiatives seamlessly across Empower's operations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Leads reviewer and respondent for DEA record requests at 503A Compounding Pharmacy and 503B Outsourcing Facility.
  • Spearheads the development, implementation, and auditing of controlled substance handling procedures across all facilities.
  • Conducts meticulous investigations into controlled substance inventory, addressing any discrepancies exceeding 2%.
  • Thoroughly reviews state board and regulatory agency record requests, submitting them to the Pharmacist-in-Charge and VP of Compliance after initial assessment.
  • Supervises the generation of mandatory monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Establishes comprehensive criteria for establishing accounts across the 503A and 503B business units.
  • Meticulously documents the entire process of account approvals, investigations, and denials within the pharmacy compliance database.
  • Takes charge of addressing all tickets or inquiries submitted to the compliance queue, particularly focusing on investigating accounts exhibiting suspicious activities.
  • Actively engages in customer calls to provide educational insights and resources, ensuring compliance awareness among customers.
  • Oversees the implementation of provider licensing software to streamline and enhance the licensing process.
  • Develops a structured cadence for reaching out to providers with inactive licenses, ensuring timely updates.
  • Conducts internal and external training sessions on licensing requirements, catering to both federal and state agencies.
  • Collaborates with sales and IT teams to support compliance initiatives, facilitating seamless integration with customer platforms for prescription submissions.
  • Fosters a creative and collaborative work environment, encouraging teamwork, professional growth, and knowledge sharing among team members.
  • Monitors and evaluates employee performance. Provides feedback as necessary.
  • Evaluates department headcount needs, conducts interviews and selects qualified candidates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a leadership role with a focus on DEA compliance in pharmaceutical settings.
