SUNY Empire State College seeks an Assistant Director of Financial Services (State Title: Senior Staff Assistant) to join its finance team. Reporting directly to the Director of Financial Services, this professional is responsible for developing and leading various financial analysis projects and completion of financial reporting. The Assistant Director will support the Director in a variety of projects, including the annual budget process, and will retrieve and analyze data utilizing Excel and the SUNY BI system. The selected incumbent shall be an action-oriented, forward-thinking, and creative individual with high ethical standards.

Job responsibilities will include the following:

  • Building dashboards in Power BI; building budget models and financial trackers in excel using historical and projected data; and leading other financial data projects across the college
  • Assisting the budget office as they prepare the annual budget
  • Participating in Daily Vendor Briefings (DVBs) to identify where savings can be achieved
  • Monitoring spend by various departments and communicating with the departments when the reports show red flags or concerns
  • Applying proficiency in financial analysis, data mining, and quantitative analysis to see beyond the data in identifying and quantifying high-impact risks and opportunities
  • Acting as technical lead on financial data reports and budget training for the college community
  • Developing and implementing new processes to create a more efficient and effective finance department
  • Providing consultation and analysis to the Finance leadership team on a wide range of fiscal and operational issues
  • Working directly with various college departments to assist in budget management
  • Developing data strategies (e.g. what expense data should we capture to manage forecasting and variance to budget)
  • Providing ad hoc analysis for internal and external stakeholders to answer business questions
  • Responsible for reconciling financial data sourced from multiple internal and external systems
  • Developing, enhancing and maintaining weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting to internal and external stakeholders
Job Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and two (2) or more years of progressively increasing responsibility in finance or budgeting
  • Prior experience in an analyst or similar role
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and MS PowerPoint
  • Able to design, compile, analyze and present dashboards and financial trackers to senior leadership
  • Strong communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment where multitasking and prioritization of work is necessary to succeed
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and be able to work cross functionally with their colleagues across the campus
  • Detail oriented and have strong analytical, organizational, and technological skills
  • Demonstrated experience organizing, managing and working with financial data

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience working at or with SUNY
  • Experience utilizing Power BI
  • Experience with effectively facilitating teams comprised of internal and external stakeholders
