WESTCHESTER – YONKERS, NY

I. ORGANIZATION INFORMATION
Empire Justice Center, a highly respected, statewide legal services organization, is seeking a
Bilingual Immigrant Rights Paralegal to join our Immigration Practice Group. This is an

II. POSITION SUMMARY

Empire Justice Center is pleased to announce an opening for a full-time Bilingual Immigrant Rights
Paralegal for our Immigration Practice Group. The Bilingual Immigrant Rights Paralegal will be a
critical member of our growing Immigration Practice Group, as well as a member of Acacia Center
for Justice’s Unaccompanied Children’s Program. The Unaccompanied Children’s Program is a
recently created initiative funded by the Acacia Center for Justice to provide legal services to young
people who are or have been in federal custody under the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR).
The primary function of the Bilingual Immigrant Rights Paralegal is to assist and support the
Immigration Attorney in administrative oversight of the project and in all aspects of direct
representation in immigration law matters to mostly Spanish-speaking immigrants in the lower
Hudson Valley.
III. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Spanish/English interpretation as needed.
  • Case support and document/data management.
  • Scheduling and follow-up of client and related meetings.
  • Administrative tasks associated with the Immigration Attorney’s responsibilities.
  • Assisting in the preparation of bond hearings for youth seeking less restrictive custody.
  • Provide direct representation, under attorney supervision, in immigration transactional
matters.
  • Providing support services to children who are detained in Office of Refugee
Resettlement (ORR) shelters in the lower Hudson Valley.
  • Conducting legal intake interviews and “Know Your Rights” trainings for unaccompanied
minors who are housed in or were recently housed in ORR shelters.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor and/or to meet the
needs of the organization.
IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • Strong analytical and writing skills.
  • Experience in interviewing and counseling clients desired.
  • Be willing and able to serve a geographically wide-spread area.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and be supportive to young clients.
  • A bachelor’s degree with at least three (3) years of direct client experience or,
  • An associate degree with no less than three (3) years of direct client experience
  • Have experience in trauma-informed representation and representation of minors.
  • Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) accreditation, or willingness to pursue BIA
accreditation desired.
  • Ability to produce high-quality written material, meet tight deadlines, and to work both
independently and as part of a team.

  • A paralegal hired for this position must have a driver’s license and access to a vehicle

for frequent trips to children’s detention facilities. Mileage and tolls will be
reimbursed.

V. SALARY
Salary is dependent on years of experience and based on the organizational pay scale. The
beginning salary for this position, with a minimum of 3 years of experience, is $36,904 and the
salary for this position, with 14 years of experience, is $51,920.
