Institutional Setting: 

Emory University is a leading research university with over $734 million in extramural research funding in 2018. The Laney Graduate School (LGS) enrolls approximately 2,000 students in close to 50 doctoral and master’s degree programs with faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences and the professional schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Theology, Business and Law. LGS has research and program collaborations with Georgia Institute of Technology, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other institutions and recruits students from across the US and internationally. 

The English Language Support Program (ELSP) offers for-credit speaking and writing courses for doctoral and master’s degree students who use English as an Additional Language.

Position: 

  • For the Spring 2024 semester, the ELSP may need a part-time instructor to teach an oral communication and/or graduate writing course. Spring semester is mid-January through the end of April. 
  • ELSP courses meet once per week in person on the main Emory campus in Atlanta, GA. Course times are between 9 am and 6 pm. 
  • 1.5 credit hour courses meet for 75 minutes.
  • 2.0 credit hour courses meet for 100 minutes. 
  • Responsibilities include: 
  • teaching class in person on the predetermined dates, 
  • teaching according to the established course content and learning objectives, as outlined in the course syllabus (which will be provided) 
  • grading and providing feedback on student assignments in a timely manner 
  • maintaining an organized site on Canvas (Emory’s Learning Management software) for students to use throughout the semester 
  • completing and submitting mid-term report and final grade report by established deadlines
  • Collaborating with any instructors who are teaching the same course(s) in a given semester (if applicable), such that course content and learning outcomes remain consistent across sections 

Qualifications 

3 years teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in an academic setting at an institution of higher education is required. Master’s in Applied Linguistics or TESOL and experience in the creation of instructional materials preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. 

Minimum payment:

$2,400 for a 1.5-credit hour course; $3000 for a 2-credit course.

May be adjusted for applicants with extensive relevant experience.
