Description

The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance network, or CHAMPS, is a global health surveillance network aimed at preventing childhood mortality in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. The CHAMPS network is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to increase understanding of how, where, and why children become ill & die enabling scientists and public health leaders around the world to take action. CHAMPS is envisioned to be a long-term surveillance program targeting countries with high rates of under-five mortality in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. CHAMPS has ongoing surveillance activities at nine sites in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Pakistan, and Nigeria, CHAMPS collaborates with government ministries, healthcare systems, and local stakeholders, providing technical support and financial assistance.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Provides technical and scientific expertise for programs in the areas of communicable disease, chronic disease and environmental epidemiology.
  • Designs, conducts and reports on the epidemiological study of diseases, collects and analyzes data and develops health education materials.
  • Manages and participates in investigations and surveys that have national and international impact.
  • Conducts program research and prepares operational and statistical reports.
  • May write publishable articles and papers.
  • Serves as a liaison to and works with other groups and organizations participating in related programs.
  • May travel internationally to supervise field operations. Performs related responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Reports to the Science, Site Strategy, and Implementation Senior Director and the PI/Executive Director of CHAMPS.
  • Exercises considerable latitude and independent judgment in managing surveillance and research activities.
  • Provides technical expertise on in scientific theory, research and methods of collection and analysis of data sets to CHAMPS sites.
  • Using knowledge and expertise of epidemiology, statistical and experimental platforms necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs, and procedures to collect required data.
  • Routinely develops research protocols.
  • Reviews and edits text for studies.
  • Conducts extensive literature searches and effectively summarizes reported research findings and their applicability to the research.
  • Coordinates and collaborates research activities with team members.
  • Develops and conducts presentations, represents CHAMPS at national meetings, and co-authors publications.
  • Collaborates on or authors reports and papers.
  • Designs, conducts, and reports on the epidemiological study of diseases, collects, and analyzes data.
  • Manages and participates in investigations and surveys that have national and global health impact.
  • Conducts program research and prepares operational and statistical reports.
  • Writes publishable articles and papers.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and coordinate CHAMPS Health and Demographic Surveillance (HDSS) and Pregnancy Surveillance activities. Consults and works with the CHAMPS DSS Leadership Center.
  • Provide in-dept demographic, epidemiology, and quantitative technical expertise, including data management, sound analytic approaches, and interpretation of research data.
  • With subject matter experts, lead coordination of input and recommendations on surveillance, quantitative and epidemiology activities, including planning and implementation of CHAMPS HDSS and pregnancy surveillance activities working in collaboration with CHAMPS site directors and scientific staff.
  • This position will require international travel to sites, CHAMPS network meetings, and conferences.

Duties include:

Scientific Coordination and Management:

  • Coordinate and manage the surveillance protocol implementation aspects of CHAMPS, including aiding in the revisions of the CHAMPS surveillance SOPs as needed. This includes HDSS and pregnancy surveillance.
  • Collaborate with Informatics Unit to identify and work with sites to resolve data quality issues that need immediate action.
  • Coordinate with Site Implementation Team during regular touchpoints on issues related to sites.

Cross-unit and Co-Implementation Planning and Analysis:

  • Works on the design and planning of CHAMPS data analysis (e.g., Pregnancy Surveillance, HDSS)
  • Write publishable articles and papers

Site Technical Assistance and Monitoring:

  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to CHAMPS sites in all aspects of data analysis.
  • Coordinate and lead training sessions for CHAMPS analysis as needed.
  • Support sites during implementation of surveillance and research activities

Leadership:

  • Represent Program Office in meetings, conferences, or other forums focused on CHAMPS surveillance activities, as appropriate.
  • Supervise, mentor or train student researchers, fellows, and other staff on surveillance and epidemiology activities including literature reviews, analyses, monitoring and evaluation, and development of training materials.
  • Lead coordination of analysis activities across Science, Site Strategy, and
  • Implementation Unit and within Program Office.
  • Coordinate across units and sub-units to promote scientific process cohesion and efficiencies.
  • With subject matter experts, lead coordination of input and recommendations on surveillance and epidemiology activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree in a field related to area of research or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • International travel required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive experience working in global health in low resource communities in Africa and South Asia
  • Experience working with Surveillance or Research networks in global or domestic programs.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to foresee obstacles and make strategic decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple task with excellent attention to detail
  • Demonstrated experience using statistical software (e.g. R, SAS)
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated success working and collaborating with team members.
