Reporting to the Associate Librarian for Collection Strategies, the Assessment and Special Projects Librarian works to collect, manage and analyze data in order to recommend strategies for optimal access to the scholarly materials needed to support the College's curriculum and faculty and student research. The incumbent will also be responsible for leading special projects as needed. Projects may include assessing needs for new services, implementation of new systems or services, or supporting other library activities such as instruction during peak periods of need. Opportunities for ongoing participation in research and instructional services and/or materials selection may be available depending on qualifications and interest. May supervise one or more student assistants.

As a member of a friendly, vibrant college community, committed to excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, the Assessment and Special Projects Librarian will operate within a newly reorganized Learning Commons structure designed to support student learning and success through collections, services and educational programming.

The Assessment and Special Projects Librarian's primary focus is on collecting and thoroughly analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to advise the Library's senior leadership on evidence-based content acquisition, including

  • Collecting user data using a variety of tools and methods;
  • Designing assessment strategies and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to inform the strategic allocation of the Library's collections budget;
  • Deploying data visualization tools to provide Library senior leaders with ready access to current data;
  • Assisting the Associate Librarian to evaluate the Library's consortia resource selection and other efforts to acquire shared content;
  • Under the direction of the Associate Librarian, preparing reports analyzing collection and acquisitions strategies;
  • Researching and recommending models and decision processes that promote and sustain cost-effective access to scholarly material;
  • Monitoring key indicators such as return on investment and usage trends;
  • Working with the Associate Librarian for Reference, Instruction and Outreach to assess information literacy program, including impact of instruction on use of library collections and services;
  • Researching emerging trends in publishing and library services.

Special projects would focus on areas such as:

  • Assisting with major migrations, such as in our planned move from the Voyager ILS to FOLIO;
  • Participating in information literacy instruction when there is a need;
  • Research to inform policy development;
  • Assessment of existing collections - including special collections;
  • Evaluating the efficacy of specific library processes and procedures;
  • Researching demand for, and feasibility of, proposed changes to Library programs or services;
  • Working with other unit leaders to plan and implement new services or processes;
  • Working with stakeholders outside the Library on joint projects to support the curriculum.

Job Requirements:

A qualified applicant should have the following:

Required Qualifications

  • A master's degree in library or information sciences from an American Library Association accredited institution, or a combination of substantial progress toward that degree and substantial academic library experience;
  • At least one year of relevant library experience;
  • Knowledge of current, evolving, and innovative models of collection development and scholarly communication;
  • Strong data analysis skills; proven ability to gather, assess, interpret, and present quantitative and qualitative data for varied audiences;
  • High level of proficiency with Excel, Qualtrics, and other software applications used to collect, manage and present data;
  • Demonstrated success working effectively independently and within teams;
  • Demonstrated skill with oral and written communications, sufficient for clearly presenting complex information to a variety of audiences;
  • Experience managing complex projects and leading project teams;
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills to establish and maintain productive working relationships with diverse colleagues and Library constituencies;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills sufficient to balance multiple priorities, deadlines, and changing project parameters;
  • Evidence of flexibility and initiative when working within a fast-paced, changing environment;
  • Aptitude for learning about and working with emerging technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with creating collection development and management policies and strategies;
  • Academic coursework in statistics and/or data analysis;
  • Experience working with publishers and/or database vendors;
  • Experience with data visualization tools;
  • Knowledge of scholarly communications issues, tools, and resources;
  • Familiarity with electronic resource licensing practices;
  • Experience working with sensitive or confidential data.
  • Experience with Springshare products, especially LibInsight
  • Experience with software migration and/or the FOLIO system
  • Instructional experience, especially in information literacy
