JOB DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL LIBRARIAN AND MEDIA SPECIALIST

(Beginning with the 24/25 school year)

LOCATION: WEST SIDE ELEMENTARY

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree--Required
  • Valid Tennessee teaching license with Library Information Specialist preK-12 (473) endorsement--Required
  • Previous experience in an educational or related setting-Preferred
  • Meet the health and physical requirements and be fingerprinted.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The School Library Media Specialist will create a dynamic learning environment that bridges the gap between access and opportunity for all learners. They will perform each of the five roles described in the National School Library Standards (NSLS): leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator. By doing so, the Library Media Specialist work will result in a well-rounded educational program that supports and strengthens curriculum and instruction embedded in content areas throughout the school.

The ideal candidate will be strongly proactive and highly proficient at building collaborative trust relationships, with expertise in the NSLS and a clear vision for implementing the NSLS's six Shared Foundations of Inquire, Include, Collaborate, Curate, Explore, and Engage. The Library Media Specialist will build a library program that emphasizes outreach, engagement, and relationships as the means of preparing learners for their futures in college, career, and life.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES

IN THE ROLL OF LEADER:

The Library Media Specialist will have...

  • Knowledge and expertise in research-based instruction and learning theories
  • Knowledge and expertise in digital and print materials to support reader advisory and promote a culture of reading throughout the school community
  • Proficiency in a variety of technologies to support equitable digital access for learners and educators, including but not limited to computer productivity applications, high-quality online resources, and emerging and mobile platforms
  • Strong interpersonal, time-management, and oral and written communication skills
  • Content knowledge and ability to implement the following Key Commitments and their related Competencies as described in the NSLS:
    • Inquire: Build new knowledge by inquiring, thinking critically, identifying problems, and developing strategies for solving problems.
    • Include: Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to inclusiveness and respect for diversity in the learning community
    • Collaborate: Work effectively with others to broaden perspectives and work toward common goals
    • Curate: Make meaning for oneself and others by collecting, organizing, and sharing resources of personal relevance
    • Explore: Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection
    • Engage: Demonstrate safe, legal, and ethical creating and sharing of knowledge products independently while engaging in a community of practice and an interconnected world
  • Proficiency in effective classroom management strategies that are learner-focused and relationship-oriented

The Library Media Specialist will...

  • Ensure that all school library's resources, services, and standards are aligned with district, building, and teacher priorities Set a vision for the school library as a center for student ownership, empowerment, and social justice, and lead members of the school community in achieving that vision
  • Stay abreast of and develop expertise in new skills, knowledge, and standards in the profession as they related to teaching, learning, technology, and innovation
  • Develop and conduct formal and informal professional development activities on information resources, technologies, information literacy and media literacy, digital citizenship, and other best practices per the school's needs
  • Foster positive perceptions and participatory culture in the library through outreach and promotional activities that build and advocate for strong relationships with stakeholders

IN THE ROLL OF INSTRUCTIONAL PARTNER:

The Library Media Specialist will...

  • Collaborate with individual teachers and teacher teams on planning standards-based units integrating resources, information, ideas, and technology in all formats
  • Participate in district, building, and department or grade-level curriculum development and assessment on a regular basis
  • Collaborate with members of the school community to promote rigorous instruction and personalized

IN THE ROLL OF INFORMATION SPECIALIST:

The Library Media Specialist will...

  • Plan, develop, and continually assess the library's collection to meet the needs of the school community
  • Evaluate, curate, and recommend information and technology resources and strategies for inquiry-based processes
  • Ensure that the school community's diverse developmental, cultural, social, and linguistic needs are represented in and served by the collection
  • Practice and promote effective information literacy, computer literacy, media literacy, and digital citizenship
  • Educate the school community on the ethical use of information and the intellectual property of others

IN THE ROLL OF TEACHER:

The Library Media Specialist will...

  • Plan and implement a comprehensive standards-based instructional program using the NSLS and related content standards as needed
  • Foster opportunities for learners to demonstrate personal curiosity and creation of knowledge through engaging with a wide variety of resources and technology
  • Embed skills instruction authentically in context within grade bands and within disciplines
  • Provide challenging and authentic opportunities that address the needs of the broad range of learners, including students with special needs

IN THE ROLL OF PROGRAM MANAGER:

The Library Media Specialist will...

  • Develop, promote, and maintain an up-to-date and welcoming school library facility and environment; ensure that multiple learning activities can occur in both physical and virtual spaces
  • Facilitate school participation in reading and technology promotional programs and activities
  • Promote maximum access to the library's facility and collection via flexible and efficient scheduling, procedures, circulation policies, furniture and shelving arrangements, and digital solutions
  • Analyze and align all budget expenditures to meet the needs of the school community; prepare and maintain all financial records accurately
  • Follow all state and local policies and procedures, including those for selecting instructional materials, dealing with challenged materials, using audio-visual materials, and using social media
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical systems and workflows for acquisition, circulation, equipment storage and care, collection analysis, and inventory
  • and Complete other duties as assigned by the principal

PHYSICAL DEMNDS:

Applicants may need to lift objects that exceed 25 lbs. or the weight of an average child, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows: pushing and/or pulling; climbing; stooping and/or kneeling; reaching; talking; hearing; seeing.

TEMPERMENT:

Applicants must be able to adapt and perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
