Elizabeth Academy is Hiring an Upper Elementary Teacher - Montessori Near Salt Lake, UT

Elizabeth Academy is seeking an Upper Elementary Lead Teacher with at least five years of Montessori elementary classroom experience and Upper Elementary MACTE credentials. Experience working with children with exceptionalities is preferred.

Elizabeth Academy is a private, nonprofit, inclusive model Montessori school with campuses in Millcreek and Sugarhouse. As an inclusive school, our student population reflects the population at large, and includes children of all abilities. All students are well supported, with therapists and enrichment specialists serving children’s needs on site.

We have two campuses - Elizabeth Academy Primary (infant - 6th grade) and Elizabeth Academy Secondary (7th - 12th grade), and approximately 350 students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Upper Elementary Montessori credential
  • Elementary-level Montessori Classroom teaching experience: 3 years
  • Bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Teaching License
  • Coursework and Knowledge of Special Education

Job Responsibilities:

At Elizabeth Academy, it is normal to have a wide range of student needs in each classroom.

  • Responsible for modeling a positive, proactive attitude toward inclusion and being open to its constant evolution and development at our school. The lead teacher’s growth mindset related to inclusion is vital.
  • Responsible for staying up-to-date on inclusion research and best-practices, for utilizing and collaborating with specialists, implementing their recommendations and documenting this process.
  • Must ensure that vision statements and SSPs are developed as needed for students and that all classroom team members are involved in writing them. The lead teacher is also responsible for ensuring consistent implementation and progress toward developed SSP goals and data tracking and reporting that is effective, consistent, and understood/utilized by ALL team members.

Planning, Preparation and Instruction:

Create instruction that supports the development of the cognitive, emotional, social, physical and spiritual growth of the child.

  • Use the School Curriculum, Montessori Albums and current research-based best instructional practices approved by the Principal to develop integrated units of instruction that meet both the group and individual needs of all students.
  • Responsible for maintaining an on-going dialogue with enrichment and resource teachers and coordinating curriculum integration and implementation with those teachers.
  • Work with ALL students assigned to the classroom, including those with special needs. Participate in staff and parent meetings, training, and planning initiatives to fully meet each child’s needs.
  • Use various assessment tools/strategies such as observations, children’s work samples, continuums of development, portfolios, etc. as approved by the Principal to help make instructional decisions for individual students.

Lesson Planning:

  • In conjunction with the other lead teachers in program level, responsible forpreparing a general outline of topics and concepts (syllabus) to be covered over the course of the school year.
  • Responsible for preparing detailed daily lesson plans two months or more in advance of giving the lessons (six months to a year is preferred). Necessary adjustments to the lesson plans should be made with as much advance notice as possible, but at a minimum, one week prior to giving the lessons.
  • Lesson plans must be aligned with level and school-wide curriculum map/planning when required and/or appropriate.
  • Lesson modifications/adaptations are the shared responsibility of all team members. The lead teacher is responsible for scheduling weekly lesson planning meetings for his/her classroom team, as well as time on a weekly basis with his/her classroom team to plan modifications and adaptations. The purpose of these meetings is to ensure that all team members have a deep level understanding of both the lessons and the adaptations of those lessons.
  • Check for student knowledge and understanding.
  • Make adaptations/modifications based on checks for knowledge.
  • Report areas of student need to parents and keeps them informed of progress.

Classroom Environment/Management:

Responsible for preparing an environment that meets the sensitive period/plane of development of the children.

  • Responsible for preparing a peaceful and nurturing environment in which furnishings and materials are complete and correspond to needs of the group; for maintaining a clean, orderly and attractive Montessori environment, including care and maintenance of plants, animals, classroom materials and equipment; for communicating classroom needs in accordance with school policy (i.e. maintaining classroom materials inventory).
  • Create an environment that demonstrates rapport with, respect and kindness for all students as well as between students. The teacher models and guides children in conflict resolution and problem solving strategies. The teacher promotes an understanding of and an appreciation for all cultures.
  • Demonstrate rapport with, respect and kindness for, and collaboration with all staff members and parents. Proactively use conflict resolution and problem solving strategies in interactions with all adults to maintain a peaceful and respectful school environment.

Academics

  • Has high academic expectations for ALL students.
  • Has measurements in place for the determination of concept/skill mastery and generalization and that daily skill building and practice is taking place.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
