The Biotechnology Discovery Research Division in San Diego plays a crucial role in generating, characterizing, and optimizing biotherapeutics from hit generation through lead optimization and preclinical development. We support cross-disciplinary efforts to engineer innovative biotherapeutics that treat metabolic, autoimmune, oncologic, and neurologic diseases.

We are seeking a self-motivated, collaborative Data Scientist to join the growing team. In this role, you will utilize your data analytics expertise to analyze multi-dimensional data generated from our high-throughput experimentation labs. Your insights will significantly impact decision-making, aiding the rapid discovery and optimization of novel therapeutic proteins.

Responsibilities

  • Curate and organize diverse data types, including activity/function, structure-activity relationship, biophysical characterizations, sequences, concerning both structured and unstructured data.

  • Utilize statistical models and machine learning algorithms to identify patterns and trends relevant to antibody discovery and protein and peptide engineering.

  • Effectively communicate data insights to project teams and stakeholders.

  • Partner with experimental scientists to guide the design of data generation and data capture strategies, aligned with ML objectives.

  • Maintain close collaboration with internal IT professionals to ensure seamless integration of data science solutions.

  • Keep abreast of the latest trends and technologies in data science. Proactively initiate efforts that contribute to organizational goals.

  • Actively engage in the external environment and contribute to the field through scientific publications and presentations.

Basic qualifications

  • PhD degree, or Master degree with at least 3 years relevant experience, in computational biology, computer science, bioinformatics, or a related discipline.

  • Experience in programming languages/tools (Python, R, etc).

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience in data science and advanced analytics for antibody discovery and protein engineering is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated success in applying data science to therapeutic protein applications, as evidenced by a strong publication record.

  • Proficiency in data curation, data processing, database programming, and data mining.

  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to explain complex ideas to scientists with diverse backgrounds.

  • Strong collaborative skills and proven ability to work with cross-functional teams.
