Department Information

The Deputy General Counsel (Research) serves as the primary Office of General Counsel (OGC) point of contact for the Institute's research enterprise, including but not limited to the Georgia Tech Research Institute ("GTRI"), and - working collaboratively with the Director of Affiliated Organizations or similar position- research-related affiliated organizations. This role will also serve as OGCs primary contact for any legal questions related to research, research-related legal negotiations, intellectual property, export controls and sanctions, corporate engagement, and commercialization matters across the Institute. As an OGC workstream lead, the Deputy General Counsel (Research) will partner with campus units/departments; legal, ethics, risk, and compliance colleagues; Institute leadership; and external Institute partners and regulators to solve complex business and legal challenges. The Deputy General Counsel (Research) will also be responsible for workstream operations (team leadership and development, team day-to-day operations, and strategic planning). The individual in this role will have proven experience in research-related matters, proactive solution-oriented approaches to reduce risk, and a proven track record of service delivery experience to multiple internal and external stakeholders.

As the Deputy General Counsel (Research), this role will work closely with the Institute's General Counsel, the Executive Vice President for Research, SVP of Georgia Tech Research Institute, campus leaders, University System of Georgia, OGC peers and team members, and business partners to provide legal guidance and support and to ensure information is shared and transactions are completed effectively. In addition to legal expertise, this position requires effective communication skills, the ability to build and sustain relationships, negotiation, problem-solving, process-improvement skills, and diplomacy.

Job Summary

The Deputy General Counsel will serve as the primary Office of General Counsel (OGC) point of contact for the legal needs of particular functional areas (workstreams) across the Institute. As an OGC leader, the Deputy General Counsel t will partner with campus units/departments, legal, ethics, risk, compliance colleagues, Institute leadership, and external Institute partners to solve complex business and legal challenges. The Deputy General Counsel will also be responsible for work-stream operations (team leadership and development, day-to-day operations, and strategic planning). The individual in this role will have proven experience leading people and guaranteeing service delivery to multiple internal and external stakeholders. This role will build and sustain close working relationships with the Institute's General Counsel, Cabinet-level campus leaders, OGC peers and team members, and business partners to provide legal guidance and support and to ensure information is shared diplomatically and transactions are negotiated and completed effectively.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 - Serve as the primary point of contact for legal items regarding the workstream and provides high-level legal advice and services, including, but not limited to, lead and/or conduct legal negotiations, research, preparation of legal documents and opinions, and case management for the protection and interests of the Institute.

Job Duty 2 - Provide legal advice of more complex or specialized legal activities, counseling and advice primarily to management on legal problems of a complex nature, education and training within area of expertise to functional or operational area managers to ensure their activities comply with law, regulation and policy. Provide legal advice within areas of expertise to area managers to ensure their activities, policies, business practices, and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations

Job Duty 3 - Provide legal review of proposed and established Institute policies, procedures, and governance processes; provide advice and counsel to the general business and on-going operations of the Institute.

Job Duty 4 - Consult with appropriate teams regarding the conduct of litigation and administrative hearings and oversees any Institute representation as it pertains to the Institute (including reporting on litigation, disputes, dispute resolution, and other indications of Institute risk); provide legal advice on contracts and other transactional matters pertinent to the Institute.

Job Duty 5 - Manage the workstream and supervises the legal work of Workstream team members, to include assigning and delegating duties, contract reviews and approvals, to team members and monitoring the activities and progress against the OGC's goals, provide performance reviews and timely feedback to direct reports regarding performance, execution, and contribution.

Job Duty 6 - Collaborate with OGC colleagues, opposing counsel, and business partners to assign work and to align on objectives and expectations and ensure project teams deliver against them; interact with external counsel and representatives of the state Attorney General office and Board of Regents legal staff on pending matters and legal issues. Is a visible presence at campus activities and with appropriate units /departments.

Job Duty 7 - Lead transformational projects defined in conjunction with other parts of OGC or the Institute; support the planning, execution and allocation of resources needed to run the project and assist with driving the execution of the strategic plan priorities.

Job Duty 8 - Recommend, develop and facilitate campus-wide education and training.

Job Duty 9 - Foster collaborative relationship with team members; develop a supportive and engaged team; provide leadership, mentorship and coaching to team members; ensures teams are supported; provides oversight and guidance on a regular basis and keeps connected with the team.

Job Duty 10 - Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school member in good standing with the Georgia Bar or ability to be admitted to practice law in Georgia within six months of employment months of hire. Other Required Qualifications Legal experience within sizeable public research universities or complex state government agencies. Previous people or project team management experience. Required Experience 10 years of job-related experience. 5 years of leadership/management experience.

Proposed Salary

Salary $167,368 to $242,683
