Elder Research is Hiring an Intern - Data Science and Engineering Near Charlottesville, VA

Data Science and Engineering Summer Internship 

Arlington, VA; Charlottesville, VA; Raleigh, NC

The summer internship is paid and much of the work can be done remotely or at the Elder Research offices in Arlington, VA or Charlottsville, VA or Raleigh, NC) There will likely be some in-person events in Northern, Virginia. The duration of the project is 12 weeks with some flexibility on start and end times. 

Schedule and Requirements:

  • Applications accepted beginning in December 2023
  • Screening and interview process starts no earlier than February 1, 2024
  • Internship begins with in-person onboarding events on Monday May 20th (Location TBD, likely Arlington, VA)
  • Offers extended no later than April 1, 2024 or till all openings are filled
  • US citizenship required for some intern activities and most full-time positions after graduation
  • Any major or year of school is welcome to apply if they have some of the desired qualifications (Successful interns have had a range of majors including math, statistics, computer science, data science, engineering, operations research).

Opportunities, Essential Functions and Tasks: 

Through this internship, the interns will have a direct impact on client or Elder Research mission while gaining real world experience with the full life-cycle of a computer science/data science project. Whether they have an engineering or analytics background, this internship will provide the interns with hands-on learning opportunities to grow a broad range of skills to further enhance their education and shape their future career goals. A successful project will also likely result in meaningful improvements in client or Elder Research outcomes. 

The intern team will work together in groups, with assistance from ERI’s mentors, to research the application of state-of-the-art approaches and best practices. Teams will have access to modern technology and techniques. Interns in the government space will be working off-site of the client. 

Within this internship, the interns will engage with many, if not all, of the following aspects of ERI work:

  • Clarify problem definition
  • Explore vast, data sets and subject matter resources 
  • Research state-of-the-art analytics approaches 
  • Select viable algorithm options for assessment 
  • Iterate to build and further evaluate machine learning models
  • Create an application to share results 
  • Work in AWS cloud environment or GPU box
  • Receive mentorship from experienced technical collaborators 
  • Meet stakeholders to debrief at client location 

Desired Qualifications (not all are required):

  • Passion for analytical problem solving and/or related engineering aspects
  • Quick learner through formal and self-guided education 
  • Pro-active self-starter with a desire to make an impact
  • Ability to work in teams or individually
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams
  • Hands on experience with technical tools (Programing language like Python, R and SQL, IDE tools like Jupyter Notebook, AWS)
  • Wants exposure to or have a strong interest in learning about any of the following:
    • Data analytics use cases and technical methods of Graph Analytics, Natural Language Processing, or other analytics techniques like Large Language Models (LLMS) and Generative AI 
    • Developing in containerized services in cloud environments (e.g. AWS) or GPU
    • Refining and scaling machine learning operations 
    • Developing applications and visualization tools 
    • Movement of trustworthy data for analytics purposes
