Hiring Range: $25.000 - $26.000 Hourly

(commensurate with qualifications)

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm, subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.

This is a temporary position in the County Attorney's Office – Human Services. Performs a variety of duties under the general supervision of the County Attorney, Chief Deputy County Attorney, or Assistant Chief Deputy County Attorney. The County Attorney's Office – Human Services Division represents El Paso County Department of Human Services (DHS) in child protection cases, adult protection cases, delinquency cases, and appeals. The Office is also involved in involuntary alcohol and drug commitments, mental health certifications, involuntary administration of medications, and imposition of legal disability cases.

  • Performs legal research of Federal and State statutes, case law, court rules, and other documents as required; drafts legal memoranda.
  • Drafts court pleadings, correspondence, and other documents.
  • Assists with litigation matters including document review, trial preparation, communication with trial witness, County staff, and court personnel.
  • Attends trials, depositions, meetings, and hearings; provides assistance to attorneys as necessary.
  • Becomes acquainted with County policies and procedures; provides general assistance to County departments as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, and procedures concerning County government and administrative/civil judicial processes and judicial decisions.
  • Knowledge of legal research.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with County staff, community representatives, the judiciary, and the general public.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in conformance with the policies and procedures of the County Attorney's Office and the objectives and goals of the County.
  • Ability to exercise tact and impartiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Discretion in the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to set work priorities and accomplish job duties in the required time period.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance. 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required; must be currently attending law school program. Must have completed first year of J.D. program; working on second or third year of J.D. program.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, drug screen and physical examination.

Duties are primarily performed in an office, remote, and/or court environment. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 25 lbs. This is a temporary position not to exceed five months.
