Educational Service District 112 is Hiring a K-12 Guidance Counselor / Teacher (Wishram) Near Wishram, WA

Wishram School District will have an opening for a full-time K-12 Guidance Counselor (.6 fte) / Teacher (.4 fte) for the 2024-2025 school year. Counselors assist students in attaining their maximum personal and educational development by offering a variety of support services, including individual and group counseling, testing interpretation, development, and monitoring of students’ academic programs; consultation and collaboration with students, parents, faculty, administration. They will help develop parent informational programs and SEL teaching and monitoring. The counselor’s role is that of a student advocate and helping students achieve academic, personal, and interpersonal success.

  1. Plans and implements activities supporting goal setting, reflection, and planning for the future.
  2. Supports students’ academic performance by reviewing progress reports and report cards and planning interventions when appropriate.
  3. Consults and collaborates with teachers, staff, and parents to understand and meet the needs of students in the school setting and enhance their education.
  4. Encourages student participation in study groups, test preparation, and homework clubs.
  5. Participates in professional learning experiences to continually update own knowledge and skills.
  6. Provides individual planning sessions to students in the areas of academic planning and success, career awareness, and social/emotional development.
  7. Plans and coordinates programs such as career and college fairs, financial aid, scholarships, and other extensions of the counseling curriculum.
  8. Coordinates parent education programs to assist students in making a smooth transition from elementary to middle school and from middle school to high school and in planning post-high school options.
  9. Uses data to document the results of strategies and interventions that are used to improve student performance.
  10. Identifies at-risk students and collaborates with teachers and other professional staff to create appropriate interventions and recommendations.
  11. Coordinates and conducts school-wide activities that contribute to the school community's social/emotional or academic goals through the use of Character Strong, Academic Advisory, and PBIS programs with a focus on MTSS.
  12. Reviews and implements modifications, accommodations, and intervention plans for all general and 504 students.
  13. Work with students from grades K -12.
  14. Work with students of different ancestry backgrounds. Our district is 47% Native American.
  15. Teach reading or other skill-essential classes as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Counseling. 
  2. Washington State Certification/Endorsement in School Counseling or Guidance Counselor.
  3. Specialized in Secondary or Elementary education. 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Demonstrates knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to school counseling.
  2. Adheres to preferred practices prescribed by state and national school counselor associations.
  3. Demonstrates ability to operate and function with a wide range of student personalities and backgrounds.
  4. Is educated in various models of teaching and best practices of counseling.
  5. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  6. Demonstrates ability to utilize a learning management system to interact with and engage students.
  7. Demonstrates ability to organize and coordinate work.
  8. Demonstrates ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Master's Degree, School Counselor.
  2. Five or more years of School Counselor experience. 

Working Conditions:

Our school is in the town of Wishram, WA located in the heart if the renowned Columbia Gorge on the banks of the beautiful Columbia River. It’s a short distance away from The Dalles, OR and Goldendale, WA. The small town of Wishram is rural and an ideal family/recreational setting. The community is very supportive of the school and its staff. 

Wishram School is staffed with one Superintendent/Principal, 10 certified teachers, and 11 classified staff members. Additional educational staff is provided by Educational Service District 112, Special Services Cooperative. Staff turnover is generally low. Curriculum is provided during a eight period day and all grades begin and end the instructional day at the same time.
