Position: Community Prevention Specialist

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Direct Supervisor:

Community Prevention Specialist
(Royal City & Cle Elum School District)

Director of Student Support

The Community Prevention Specialist responsibilities are to help develop, organize, and
maintain the community substance abuse prevention coalition within the boundaries of the Royal
City and Cle Elum School District; provide assistance to the community coalition; to help guide
the continuous development and implementation of a community substance abuse prevention
plan; and serve as a liaison between the community and evaluators.
Essential Job Functions:
A. Works as a team member with agency staff and partners to meet program goals; reports

to lead agency, Health Care Authority (HCA), partners and coalition leadership on
progress and challenges.

B. Continually broadens expertise in prevention, including risk and protective factor
model, and serves as a resource person for the indicated communities and agency.

C. Conducts literature/resource reviews to identify best practices for coalitions.
D. Coordinates activities such as:

a. Identifying community resources and understanding community needs
b. Analyzing community health indicator data
c. Conducting planning activities to enhance community health
d. Directing coalitions in selecting evidence-based health interventions
e. Collaborating with other local, regional or state coalitions to strengthen local efforts

E. Assists coalition members in navigating Strategic Prevention Framework and guides
coalitions to develop a comprehensive action plan based on needs assessment and
strategic planning.

F. Develops and implements data collection methods/tools for activities and projects
in conjunction with others.

G. Coordinates and facilitates coalition meetings and communicates effectively
with members.

H. Plans, coordinates and conducts educational and training activities. Develops training,
reference materials, and workshops for coalition and community members and
activities.

I. Develops content for coalition pages on agency website.
J. Collaborates with agency leadership, health and education partners, local businesses,

community-based organizations, and the media to promote coalitions’ mission and
goals.

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience
1. B.A. Degree in Education, Health Education, Communications, Social Sciences, or closely

related field.
2. Two years of work experience in community organizing, program coordination, or

community-based programs involving youth, drug/alcohol/tobacco abuse or other related
community health prevention or counseling.

Licenses/Special Requirements
1. Have a current Certified Prevention Professional certificate, or required to obtain Certified

Prevention Professional, Certified Health Education, Specialist or Chemical Dependency
Professional certification within 18 months of being hired.

2. Ability to pass a background check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI.

10. Ability to monitor expenditures in compliance with grant and organizational guidelines.
11. Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings and events.
12. Ability to demonstrate basic proficiency in Windows Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, and

Outlook).
13. Valid Driver’s License and willingness to travel.
