Education for Change is Hiring a 24/25 Dean of Instruction, 3rd-5th Grade ELA (pool) Near Oakland, CA

REPORTS TO: Director of Instruction


Position Summary

Education for Change is looking for a dynamic, visionary and experienced instructional leader who will lead their site’s implementation of its instructional framework to achieve unprecedented student outcomes. The Dean ensures that teachers implement rigorous, standards-aligned, research-based, coherent instructional frameworks, and receive the necessary support and development to effectively meet the demands of the Common Core Standards. They maintain focus on achievement for all students, and analyzes and responds to data. The Dean works with teachers and other team members to set goals and monitor students progress and build teacher capacity to use student work and other data to guide instruction so that all students meet their goals. In conjunction with team members, the Dean of Instruction develops, plans, and delivers professional development that provides content and practical pedagogical strategies to increase the effectiveness of instructional practices. They model effective pedagogy, through team teaching, elbow coaching, use of video and other practices, and provide feedback that increases teachers' efficacy.

The Dean of Instruction observes classroom instruction daily, meeting with teachers no less than once a week to give feedback as well as assist in planning. The Dean works closely with multiple teams, including grade level and department teams, the Instructional Coach Team, and site-based instructional leadership teams, and reports directly to the Director of Instruction. All EFC instructional leaders must demonstrate a well-developed knowledge of what is required to ensure high levels of academic achievement in schools with high English Learner and low-income populations.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily coaching in instruction that can include: classroom observations, demonstration lessons, elbow coaching, etc.
  • Support teachers in implementing Common Core-aligned best instructional practices for teaching grade level content
  • Guide teachers in standards-based unit and lesson planning
  • Provide pedagogical expertise in research-based best practices
  • Participate in the collaborative development and presentation of domain specific professional development aligned to the Common Core State Standards
  • Provide summer PD and facilitate summer planning sessions as needed
  • Support timely implementation of assessments including calibration, administration, scoring, and online reporting
  • Provide training in developing appropriate formative and diagnostic assessments, including using item banks, monitoring logs, and exit tickets
  • Drive data analysis to ensure high student achievement
  • Lead network-wide initiatives as part of the Coach Team


Qualifications:

  • 3 years teaching experience
  • Experience accelerating student learning and achievement in low-income communities
  • Knowledge of curricula and instructional best practices
  • Content knowledge in Common Core Standards
  • Strong Data Analysis Skills
  • Demonstrated success as an instructional leader and in the professional development of teachers
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to work effectively with diverse communities
  • Outstanding communication and organization skills
  • Must possess a growth mindset and be able to use feedback to refine practice
