Role Overview:

The Civil Project Engineer within the Development Engineering team supports the Engineering team in managing engineering requests for all projects in Development. Project Engineer supports all aspects of civil design for wind, solar, energy storage, and other renewable technology projects for utility-scale generation. The role includes a wide variety of diverse assignments such as due diligence for IM&A, siting, feasibility studies, new technology evaluation, RFP support, proposal evaluation, conceptual design, design review, and CAPEX estimates. Work requires familiarity with civil design and construction practices related to the renewable industry. In addition, promotes environmental stewardship and a health and safety-focused culture within the Engineering group. Additional responsibilities include providing support to operating facilities as needed.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Support all development projects for civil engineering-related queries including but not limited to, requests for CAPEX input, early Engineering and Construction related questions, support for permits and crossing agreements, etc.
  • Support Solar Business Development Engineering and Storage Business Development Engineering groups in civil engineering-related matters for PV/MV and HV work
  • Coordinate with Execution Engineering, Pre-Construction, and Project Management to resolve civil engineering-related issues to ensure timely construction contract execution
  • Support contract exhibits preparation and ensures relevant obligations are coordinated with Execution Engineering
  • Maintain active involvement in all phases of Development Engineering work related to civil design including all constraints, wind turbine siting, solar project siting, DC and AC collection system routing, project substation siting, generator lead line routing, interconnect switchyard siting, electrical design interface related to junction box placement along access road route, design interface related to crossing exhibit and agreement, and permits
  • Prepare preliminary internal engineering needed to support the Development pipeline by assisting in the creation of conceptual design layouts and site layouts in AutoCAD for any permit submission and EPC RFP documents
  • Ensure that the civil portion of the EPC and long lead equipment estimate are optimized by providing project layouts, take-offs, and drawings that reflect optimized layout, along with constructability and operability reflected in order to maximize Power Purchase Agreement award potential
  • Review and interpret design drawings, specifications, and documents related to project design
  • Create and maintain a template library of drawings and calculations required for projects at the various stages of development and design
  • Analyze complex engineering problems and offer effective and efficient resolutions in a timely manner while working on several projects at once
  • Conduct value-engineering studies of alternative design approaches
  • Maintain and improve existing scope of works, guidelines, specifications, schedule, and budget template
  • Participate in project meetings and conference calls
  • Review permit-related documents and coordinate with the Execution Engineering group to ensure requirements are communicated for a compliant project design
  • Assist the Civil Engineering Manager to oversee, guide, and manage the work of third-party consultants.
  • Occasionally participate in meetings with various permitting agencies and guide a discussion on project behalf
  • Serve as an interface between the Engineering group and internal clients including, Development, Construction, Operations, Environmental, Estimating, Energy Assessment, Health & Safety, Procurement, Legal, and Central Technical Direction, to facilitate interdepartmental relations
  • Create and maintain databases and various reports to streamline internal processes
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
  • Work with Execution Engineering to ensure timely execution of various Engineering Service Agreements to support EPC RFP release.
  • Provides necessary technical documents including layout constraints, design criteria, and specification, etc. to support RFP release to potential construction contractor to gather intel for CAPEX refresh and potential contract award.
  • Reviews RFI responses and works with Estimation, Construction, Procurement, and Development to update CAPEX estimates as necessary
  • Support technical review of any IM&A project by providing a technical memo
  • Implement industry and company best practices consistent with the Central Technical Direction initiative

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited university
  • 3 years experience in civil site design
  • Professional Engineering license is preferred, in any state
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Proficient with hydroCAD or other similar hydrology modeling software
  • Proficient in hydraulic design software (HEC-RAS, CulvertMaster, FlowMaster, etc.)
  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D design
  • Proficient in ArcGIS
  • Solar and wind design experience is preferred, but not required
  • Familiarity with Flo2D or equivalent is preferred, but not required
  • Willingness to learn new software is required
  • Familiarity with concrete design for small foundations a plus
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards and codes including Uniform Building Code (UBC), International Building Code (IBC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), National Fire Protection Association, (NFPA), and American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
  • Knowledge of land surveying methods and practices, aerial photography and mapping (including UTM and NAD coordinate systems), and geospatial references
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Project and/or Primavera preferred
  • Familiarity with ProjectWise document controls systems/processes a plus

  • Lifting: Ability to lift items weighing up to 20 pounds

  • Safety: Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary
  • Walking: Ability to walk several miles per day, including across unpaved and rough surfaces when on project sites
